William Robert "Bob" Docking, age 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, leadership, and service.
Born on October 22, 1935, in Highland Park, Michigan, Bob was the beloved son of Joseph and Albertha (Warren) Docking.
In 1957, he married the love of his life, Millicent Ann Kelynack, and together they built a beautiful life over 67 wonderful years. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bob took immense pride in his family, especially his 23 grand and great-grandchildren. He was a model of love, guidance, and unwavering support.
Bob dedicated his career to education, shaping young minds and inspiring future leaders. He served as Superintendent of East Lansing Public Schools for 10 years before taking on the same role in Bloomfield Hills. His passion for learning and leadership extended beyond his district, as he also served as President of the State Superintendent Association, advocating for quality education across Michigan.
After retiring from public education, Bob continued his commitment to teaching, sharing his wisdom with students as a professor in the Education Department at the University of Detroit Mercy for nearly a decade.
Beyond his professional life, Bob was a proud supporter of his Michigan State Spartans, finding great joy in cheering for his team. Summers at Bay View were particularly special, filled with cherished memories made with family and friends.
Athletics played an important role in Bob's life, and he remained active throughout the years. A testament to his determination and spirit, he accomplished the remarkable feat of running the Detroit Free Press Marathon on his 50th birthday in 1985.
Bob and Millie were blessed with three children: Pam Docking Johnson, Jeff (Elizabeth) Docking, and Tim (Julia) Docking. He adored his grandchildren: Courtney Johnson-Norland, Ben Johnson, Tim Johnson, Bonnie Johnson, Jacob Docking, Carter Docking, Taylor Docking, Julianna Docking, Ethan Docking, Luca Docking, and Meryl Docking. Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Warren Docking.
Bob's unwavering commitment to his family, friends, and professional colleagues will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him. His kind spirit, gentle humor, and passion for education will continue to inspire future generations.
A visitation will be held at 10:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at noon on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in Farmington, MI, with a luncheon to follow.
