Vivian M.
Henderhan
Jan 2, 1937 — Aug 8, 2024
Vivian M. Henderhan, 87, of Farmington Hills, Michigan, passed away on August 8, 2024. Vivian was born on January 2, 1937, in Bridgeport, Ohio to Mario and Violet Salvador.
After graduating from Bridgeport High School in 1954, she went to New York City to pursue her dream of being a professional dancer. She later attended Kent State University, where she earned her teaching degree and a Masters of Education. While at Kent State, she met her husband of 30 years, Robert Henderhan (deceased 1990).
Vivian's teaching career began in Delaware, and she taught for 32 years, retiring from Silver Springs Elementary School in Northville, Michigan. She was a dedicated teacher and colleague, receiving numerous awards and citations, including Teacher of the Year.
Vivian had many hobbies. She loved cooking and hosting gourmet dinners, antiquing with her husband, and especially traveling. In her 87 years, she visited over 23 countries. She loved to watch all sports and regularly rooted for the Buckeyes, Pistons, and Tigers.
Nothing was more important to Vivian than family. Holidays were often spent with her sister Jean and her family at the house where they grew up in Lansing, Ohio. With aunts, uncles, and cousins nearby, it routinely turned into an impromptu Salvador family gathering. She was a dedicated mother to her two sons and to all of their friends. She was always greeted with a "Hi mom" by everyone. She was number one fan to her sons and grandchildren and never missed a game, concert, recital, or competition. She loved having her grandchildren visit, and sleepovers at grandmas, while frequent, were always special.
In addition to raising two boys, being a doting grandmother, and working as a teacher, she was a dedicated leader of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and Delta Kappa Gamma, whose missions are to promote the advancement of women in education, and The Questers, a group dedicated to the preservation of local history and artifacts. Both groups gave her great joy and many lifelong friendships. She was an active member of Orchard United Methodist Church in Farmington Hills for more than 40 years, involved in many of their charitable missions.
Vivian is survived by her two sons Robert (Marilyn) Henderhan, Patrick (Ronalee) Henderhan, her sister Jean (Donald) Dieckmann, her three grandchildren Steven Henderhan (Jessica), Taylor Tyrpin (Bryan) and Findley Henderhan, her nephew Kurt (Kristen) Dieckmann, and her grand nieces and nephews Olivia, Logan and Chase Dieckmann.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the American Association of University Women (AAUW) .
Family and friends may gather at Heeney-Sundquist for visitation on Wednesday, August 14, from 2-8 pm.
Vivian's funeral ceremony is planned for Thursday morning, August 15, at 11:00 am (in state at 10:00 am) at Orchard United Methodist Church, 30450 Farmington Road, (btw. 13-14 Mile Roads), Farmington Hills.
