Obituary

Thomas (Tom) Nappo, 73, of Green Oaks Township, MI passed away peacefully on December 19th, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Born on February 25th, 1951, Tom grew up in in a multi-generational and fiercely proud Italian American family in Detroit and Dearborn. From an early age, he discovered a passion for the bar and restaurant business, spending over four decades as an owner and/or operator of restaurants and a nationally renowned bar/ nightclub until his retirement in 2006.

Though his tireless work ethic, intrinsic drive, and strong leadership skills brought him much professional success, his most significant restaurant encounter occurred in 1973 at Biff's Restaurant. There, he persuaded a somewhat hesitant waitress named Sue Melow to join him for dinner at the Machus Red Fox. That unforgettable evening marked the beginning of their love story, which culminated in their marriage in 1975 and the birth of their beloved sons, Tom and Sean.

Tom's deep love of music was a constant throughout his life, with a foundation in Motown Review concerts with his brother Tony in Detroit and playing bass in a high school band. His musical tastes were as dynamic as his personality, spanning James Brown, Elvis Presley, and Frank Sinatra to hip-hop artists like Ludacris in later years. He shared this passion with his sons, fostering in them a lasting love and appreciation.

Tom also had a keen sense of style and fragrance, a passion for food, a love of travel and a deep appreciation for all things Italian. He especially treasured trips to some of his favorite destinations, including Aruba, Florida, and Sicily. A gifted artist, Tom expressed his creativity through painting and mosaic art. He was a proud, decades-long member of the Italian American Club and Rotary International.

Tom is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Sue, sons Tom (Sherri) and Sean (Lindsay); his beloved grandchildren Valentina, Leo, Niko and Willa; his cherished siblings; brother Tony (Debby) Nappo and sister Michelle Nappo;  and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Antonio and Vincenza Nappo.

His unwavering determination, quiet strength, sharp wit (often displayed through his humorous disdain for authority), and Larry David-like frustration with life's trivial annoyances were balanced by his fierce love for family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

The Nappo family will receive friends Friday, December 27, 2-8 pm, at the funeral home, with an evening scripture service beginning at 7pm.

A funeral Mass celebrating Tom's life will be Saturday, December 28, 10 am (in state 9:30 am), Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23815 Power Rd, Farmington, MI.

Immediately following Mass, a funeral procession will take Tom to his final place of rest, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.

Though he preferred to do so anonymously, Tom was a generous and passionate philanthropist who supported a wide range of causes and organizations in need. Per his wishes, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospita l in his memory.  Contributions can be made online here or by mail to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 101 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
