Susan L.
Oliver
May 29, 1963 — Jan 16, 2026
Susan Lee Oliver, age 62, of Westland, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2026.
Susan was born May 29, 1963, in Aurora, Colorado, the daughter of William E. Oliver II and Ruth Ann (Chamberlain) Oliver. The family later settled in Monroe, Michigan. Throughout her school years, dancing was a large part of Susie's life, participating in numerous styles of dance. Susie graduated from Monroe High School 1981, distinguishing herself as a member of the school's synchronized swimming team. In 1980 & 1981, she and her teammates achieved the honor of winning two State Championships—an accomplishment that reflected her discipline, teamwork, and determination.
Following high school, Susie entered the airline industry, working for many years with Northwest Airlines. This career opened the world to her, allowing extensive travel. She journeyed to Australia, Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, Hong Kong, China, England, Greece, France and so many others; experiences that broadened her outlook and fed a lifelong appreciation for other cultures and landscapes.
Alongside her professional life, Susie was devoted to service. She was an auxiliary member of the American Legion, participating in events supporting veterans and visiting VA hospitals to spend time with injured servicemen and women. She also volunteered generously in many capacities, always ready to give her time and energy wherever help was needed.
One of the deepest passions of her life was wildlife rescue and rehabilitation and volunteered at the Howell Nature Center. There was scarcely an injured animal she would not attempt to save. Day or night, she would answer a call to retrieve a wounded creature, nurse it, and return it to health whenever possible. This quiet, tireless compassion became one of the hallmarks by which she will be remembered.
Susie also enjoyed the freedom of the open road. She was an avid motorcyclist and traveled through several states on her motorcycle, relishing the independence and adventure such journeys provided. At home, she found equal pleasure in her kitchen. She loved to cook and was always searching her recipe books for a new dish to prepare and share.
Her fiancé, John Marszalek, was her constant companion to the end. Their shared life together was a source of comfort, loyalty, and devotion.
She is survived by her parents, William Oliver and Ruth Ann Sigler. She was loved deeply and will be sorely missed by her parents, fiancé, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Susan Lee Oliver lived with generosity of spirit, courage of conviction, and kindness toward all living things. Her absence leaves a tender ache, but her example of compassion and service remains a lasting gift to those who knew her.
