Sister Anne
Marilyn Tyler, Rsm
May 1, 1942 — Jul 22, 2025
A Sister of Mercy for 61 years
and f aithful servant, photographer, and healer through beauty
Sister Anne Marilyn, of Ypsilanti, entered eternal life on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital. She was 83 years old.
Mary Anne Tyler was born May 1, 1942, in St. Johns, Michigan, to the late Bernard and Gladys Mae (Woodbury) Tyler. Raised in Laingsburg, Michigan, Sister Anne Marilyn attended both elementary and high school in her hometown before answering her call to religious life. In 1963, she entered the Sisters of Mercy on the campus of Mercy College in Detroit, beginning a lifelong journey of service rooted in compassion, healing, and reverence for creation. She professed her final vows on August 8, 1970.
Sister Anne Marilyn's ministry in healthcare spanned more than five decades, the majority of it spent at Trinity Health Ann Arbor (formerly St. Joseph Mercy Hospital). Over her 40 years there, she became a cherished and respected member of the hospital community, combining technical expertise with spiritual sensitivity. She developed a unique specialization in medical photography—an often unseen but essential part of patient care and hospital life. For many years, she was responsible for capturing every employee ID photo, becoming a familiar and welcoming face to new hires and longtime colleagues alike.
Sister Anne Marilyn believed deeply in the healing power of nature and beauty. A passionate photographer for over 50 years, she brought this vision to life by curating, framing, and installing her own nature photography outside patient rooms. Her work transformed hospital corridors into quiet sanctuaries, offering comfort, peace, and reflection to patients, families, and staff alike.
When not behind the lens or serving others, Sister Anne Marilyn could be found immersed in the natural world she so loved—cross-country skiing, walking through the woods, or simply observing creation with awe and gratitude.
Surviving are her sister-in-law, Connie Egbert; nephews, Randy (Michelle) Tyler and Todd (Cathy) Tyler; nieces and nephews, Madison, Olivia and Whitney Tyler, and Troy (Brianna) Tyler; her Trinity Health Ann Arbor colleagues; her Sisters in Community, and all who were touched by her kindness, creativity, and gentle spirit. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Barry Tyler.
Sister Anne Marilyn's funeral liturgy will be celebrated Wednesday afternoon, July 30, at 1:00 pm, in the Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital Chapel, 5301 McAuley Drive, Ypsilanti.
