Shirley "Kay"
Gates-Brosseit
Jul 16, 1935 — May 19, 2024
Shirley Kathleen "Kay" Anders lived to the wonderful age of 88-years-old. Her kindness and humor, along with her sweet laughter as she would lean in to tell us one of her colorful stories from her younger years or to whisper a pointed zinger will live on in our memories. She loved playing music, the Church, searching for the perfect purse, and most of all, her family. Kay died on May 19, 2024 in Tremonton, Utah where she was living in the home of her daughter, Kathy.
Kay was born July 16, 1935, in Dugger, Indiana to Charles Howard Anders and Ruby Louise Goodman, the first of three children, followed by Joyce Ann and Charles Alan. She grew up on a farm where she recalled her first phone number being 7.
After graduating from Pleasantville High School, Kay attended Indiana University in Bloomington for a year. Leaving school due to illness, she moved to Michigan with a relative to look for work. Allegany Steel soon became her new employer, where, in addition to her regular duties, she was excited to be a glamorous model showing off their products. It wasn't long before she met and married William Edward "Joe" Gates. Joe and Kay settled in Detroit and started their family. After the births of their son, William Howard, and daughters, Gail Ann and Kathy Louise, they moved to Farmington where they welcomed their son, Dennis Wayne. It was there that they became members of a neighborhood pinochle group that got together monthly for a quarter century.
Balancing time between raising children and tending day-care, Kay built a busy in-home business selling health and wellness products. She later went to work for the City of Farmington Hills, working first in the Juvenile Department, followed by the Detective Department and then found her home in the city's Parks and Recreation Department. Her employment with the city was a meaningful and fulfilling part of her life that brought with it lifelong friendships
Shortly after the passing of her husband, Joe, in 2004, Kay retired and started serving in the Detroit LDS Temple. She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in numerous callings throughout her life and devoted many hours to researching her family history. She especially loved and magnified callings to teach the youth. In 2006 she met and married Michael Brosseit. Following Michael's death in August of 2023, she moved to Parker, Colorado where her son, Dennis, and his family cared for her for the next eight months.
Kay fought health issues most of her adult life. She was a tenacious fighter, and amazed her doctors who had given her six months to live - eight years ago! She frequently said that God had a purpose for her, and she saw it fulfilled through her posterity whom she loved more than life itself. She was blessed with eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Kay was preceded in death by her husbands, Joe and Michael, her brother, Alan (Bonnie) Anders of Connersville, Indianna, her son, Bill, and her grandson, Conly. She is survived by her sister, Joyce Ann (Jim) Campbell of Lyons, Indiana, and her daughters, Gail (Bob) Peters of Milford, MI, Kathy (Mike) Allen of Tremonton, Utah and son, Dennis (Kathleen) Gates of Parker, Colorado.
There will be a viewing Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 9 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Farmington Hills Stake Center (33900 W 13 Mile Road), followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery (34200 Grand River Ave, Farmington).
In lieu of flowers, in was Kay's wish that donations be directed to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Missionary Fund .
