Rose Marie
Capoccia
Oct 15, 1923 — Jan 26, 2025
Howell
"Non Dimenticar" was a phrase Rose loved to remind her family of, especially in her later years. How could we? She was a woman of incomparable energy, a warm heart, and a deep curiosity for people and life. Rose left an indelible mark on all fortunate enough to know her.
Rose was born in Yorkville, Ohio, a small town on the Ohio River, north of Wheeling, West Virginia, and south of Steubenville, Ohio. As the oldest of ten children, she grew up in a close-knit Sicilian-American family, though life was not without challenges. Her father immigrated from Sicily in his late teens, and her mother, who arrived in Ohio at age four, was determined to make a better life for their family. Only six children reached adulthood, the family's strength and bond carried them through.
After graduating from Warren Consolidated High School in Tiltonsville, Rose sought opportunities to help her family. She moved to Detroit, where she worked secretarial jobs at Harper Hospital, J.L. Hudson's, and Chrysler from 1942 to 1947, sending money home and reuniting her family in Detroit.
Music was a lifelong passion for Rose, and she shared her talent through participation in the Detroit Civic Light Opera. Later in life, she fulfilled her dream of formally studying music by enrolling at Marygrove College in her 50s. There, she studied under the acclaimed Emilia Cundari and Sergio Pezzetti and became a member of the Bel Canto Vocal Ensemble, performing across the city. Her voice was beautiful and timeless, and her joy in playing the player piano while singing will be a treasured memory for her family.
Rose's dedication extended far beyond her music. She worked at Kroger for 17 years, starting there at age 70. She poured her energy into her family and community, sharing her talents and values with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rose's generosity was boundless. A proud member of the Daughters of Isabella, she worked tirelessly in service to others. From supporting her husband during his tenure as Grand Knight of St. Scholastica's Father Boniface Council to serving as Regent and State Regent of the Francis X. Cabrini Circle, Rose was a model of faith and dedication. She hosted countless spaghetti dinners for charity, prepared Thanksgiving baskets for those in need, and embraced every opportunity to help others, demonstrating her boundless kindness and selflessness.
Beyond music and service, Rose was a woman of many talents. For years, she designed and crafted stunning drapes, raised AKC-registered poodles, and cooked and baked with the skill and passion of a professional. She truly did it all, and she did it with grace and love.
Her name could not have suited her more like a rose, Rose Marie was elegant and beautiful.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents, Rosalia Nicosia and Vincenzo Tripi; her husband, Jack Capoccia (d. 2/14/2011); and her siblings, Phyllis Tripi Beaudry, Frank Tripi, Carolyn Tripi Hutchison, Joseph Tripi, Mary Tripi Tobian. She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Frances Capoccia Florence and son-in-law Jamie Florence; her grandchildren, Jacqueline Florence Gormley (John) and Jamie Robert Florence (Elizabeth); her five great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Rose's funeral mass will be celebrated Monday morning, February 3, at 11:00 am (she will lay in state at 10:30 am) at St. Fabian Catholic Church, 32200 West 12 Mile Road in Farmington Hills.
Entombment in the Holy Sepulchre Mausoleum will take place following the luncheon.
Memorial tributes are suggested to the Solanus Casey Center or the Capuchin Soup Kitchen , Detroit.
Rose will be remembered as a woman of remarkable strength, talent, and generosity, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of all she touched. She will never be forgotten.
Non dimenticar, dear Rose, you will forever bloom in our hearts.
