Obituary

Ronald, affectionately known as "Friendly Ron," of Livonia, passed into eternal life early Wednesday morning, July 17, 2024, at the age of 75. Ronald, a developmentally disabled gentleman, touched countless lives with his soft-spoken nature, humor, and unwavering kindness.

Ron was born August 15, 1948, in Detroit, to the late Clarence and Caroline (Ascherl) Hoppe.  He had an extraordinary ability to connect with people, especially children, and he brought joy to everyone he met. His engaging personality and charming "flirtations" with the ladies made him a beloved figure in his community. Known for riding his bike around town, Ronnie would wave cheerfully to all his neighbors, spreading warmth and happiness wherever he went.

A familiar sight in his neighborhood, Ronnie enjoyed picking up and collecting everyone's newspapers, a gesture that showcased his engaging nature. His collections were a reflection of his interests and passions, including bottle caps, Detroit Lions gear, pennies, and Coca-Cola paraphernalia. He also had a deep love for cowboys, stuffed animals, and music.  In fact, he loved singing hymns and looked forward to attending church with his sister, Marcia, for over 15 years.

Ronnie had an incredible memory for cars, able to identify any make, model, and year with ease. His fascination with license plates and his ability to identify where people were from was a source of amazement and delight to those around him. Ground pepper was a staple on his meals, adding a bit of spice to his simple pleasures.

He worked diligently in the postal department of Crossroads Ministries in Gaylord, where his dedication and positive attitude were greatly appreciated. The caring staff at the nursing home where he was a long-time resident, were deeply moved by his passing, shedding tears for the gentle soul they had come to love.

Ronnie's life, though marked by challenges, was a testament to the power of kindness, humor, and human connection. He will be remembered for his generosity of spirit, his love for others, and the joy he brought to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Ronald is survived by his loving family to include sisters, Sandra (the late Edwin) Rosa, and Marcia (Gary) Boyd; as well as several nieces and nephews, and great- nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence (Ruth) Hoppe and Walter (Susan) Hoppe.  His legacy of warmth, humor, and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Family and friends may gather for Ron's funeral ceremony on Monday morning, July 22, at 11:30 am (visitation from 10:00 am) at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington.

Interment will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Park in Livonia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are kindly suggested to the Kalkaska Senior Center, 303 S. Coral Street, Kalkaska, MI, 49646 (231-28-5030).

May Ronald rest in eternal peace, his gentle spirit forever remembered and cherished.
