Robert J. Smith, 98, of Farmington Hills, cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, passed into eternal life on July 3, 2022.
Bob was the beloved husband of the late Therese for 44 years; father of five children who meant the world to him, Maureen (Paul) Kane, Kathleen (William) Knapp, Dr. Robert (Janine) Smith, Therese (William) Fortney, and Susan (Scott) McAdams; grandfather of 13 grandchildren, the late Colleen Gottis, Morgan Facchini, Marysa (Brad) Layton, Paul (Rachel) Knapp, Madeline Knapp, Therese Knapp, Cullen (Lindsay) Smith, Austin Smith, Meaghan Fortney, Sean Fortney, Alyson McAdams, Patrick McAdams, and Sean McAdams; great-grandfather of Addison, Silas and Cole Facchini, and Fiona Layton; dear brother of the late Raymond (the late Rita) Smith; and loving dog-dad to Ben, Shelby, Belle and Xander, all of whom lived exceptional lives.
Bob was born in Chicago, on July 13, 1924. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1942, and Loyola University, Chicago, in 1949 with a B.S. in Commerce. He served in the US Army in WWII in N. Africa and Italy from 1943 to Dec. 1945. Bob joined General Motors – United Motors Service Division in 1955 in sales. After several sales assignments in Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, and Detroit, he was appointed General Sales Manager of United Delco Division in 1973 and retired in 1987 as General Director of AC Delco. Following retirement, he volunteered with the Detroit Executive Services Corps for approximately 10 years assisting non-profit agencies.
The Smith family will receive guests on Monday, July 11, from 2-8 pm, with 7 pm prayers, at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington.
Bob's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday morning, July 12, at 10:00 am (in state 9:30 am) at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23615 Power Rd., Farmington. Military funeral honors will conclude his funeral mass.
Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, will follow the luncheon in the church social hall.
Memorial tributes are suggested to St. Vincent DePaul Society at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish or the Capuchins.
