Obituary

Robert George McWilliam, age 87, of Farmington Hills, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on July 13, 2022, with family by his side.

Bob was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late John and Gertrude (Cinnamon) McWilliam. He served in the U.S army in the Military Assistance Advisory Group in Japan for 3 years. He was in the first graduating class at the University of Michigan Dearborn in 1962, studying business. He married his wife, Carole, on June 17, 1966, at St. Linus Catholic Church in Dearborn Heights.

He enjoyed bowling and he was able to help pay his way through college by winning bowling tournaments. Bob also loved playing tennis and played until he was 86. He loved attending the Kentucky Derby with his friends, a tradition for 35 years. He enjoyed hunting and vacationing at Drummond Island, Michigan. He worked his career at the US Census Bureau for 26 years. Retirement did not slow Bob down. He worked in a mailroom at BBDO for 15 years. He then prepared taxes, and last helped his son, Dave, cutting 10 acres of grass on the family farm. Bob had a kind heart. He was a good listener, always had well-researched advice, and was known for many witty one-liners. He will be dearly missed.

Bob is survived by his wife, Carole McWilliam; children, Karen (Chris) Loper, David (Sherry) McWilliam, and Laura (Brad) Whiting; grandchildren, Austin Loper, Julia Loper, James Loper, Alexander McWilliam, Amelia McWilliam, Cora Whiting, and Reese Whiting; and sister, Shirlee Smith.
