Obituary

Robert "Bob" Hendricks, a Detroit original with a heart of gold hidden beneath a stoic exterior, passed away on November 17, 2024. Born to the late Hilliard and Irene Hendricks on August 11, 1946, Bob grew up one of five siblings, learning early on that life is about grit, sacrifice, and doing the right thing—even if it meant skipping dinner to make sure his brothers and sister didn't go hungry. Later, taking care of his family was his top priority.

Bob was the kind of man who believed actions spoke louder than words. A Vietnam-era veteran, he served in Germany, where he developed a sharp eye for mechanics. After returning home, he dedicated 46 years to Ford Motor Company, working at the Rouge Plant as a Hydraulic Repairman. If it moved on wheels, Bob could fix it—and if it didn't move, he probably knew how to make it faster.

Bob's love story with Debra was as epic as they come. When he proposed, she turned him down, saying she was destined for the bright lights of Vegas. Bob, ever pragmatic, sold the engagement ring and bought a 1963 Corvette Stingray instead, his one and only prized material possession. As fate would have it, Debra ran out of money and returned to Michigan, where they picked up right where they left off. Bob got the car and the girl, and they shared over 52 years of marriage, proving life's greatest victories aren't won easily.

He had a love for cars and racing that never faded. Bob couldn't resist burning rubber when the light turned green, and he hated being first at a stoplight while driving his Vette, because the temptation was too strong. His daughter Annie gave him one of the greatest gifts of his life: the chance to drive a race car at Michigan International Speedway. The joy on his face that day showed just how much the experience meant to him.

At home, Bob was the calm in the middle of the Hendricks family storm. While his wife and kids were loud and lively, Bob was steady, almost like he had smooth jazz playing in his head. Although he was a man of few words, he had a knack for comedic timing, like the time he diffused a heated family debate by smashing a box of chips on the kitchen floor, leaving everyone laughing.

Bob shared a special bond with each of his kids, but everyone knew his daughter Annie had him wrapped around her finger. Her brothers quickly learned that if Annie did the asking, their dad would almost always say yes. Bob cherished the quality time he spent with Jason at the Detroit Grand Prix, where they bonded over their shared love of racing.

Bob showed great pride in all of his children, especially his son Michael. Bob paid special attention to Michael's education. Often sitting with him for hours tutoring him with his piles of Catholic school homework. Later, he was proud Mike became a nurse and would only allow Mike care for him in his convalescence.

In retirement, Bob enjoyed life's simple pleasures—watching races and sports, and spending time with his grandkids. On a family cruise, when Jason handed him a beer and called him "Pops," Bob teared up at the gesture. Once again showing his love of spending time with his family.

Bob is survived by his children, Jason (Brenda), Michael, and Annie Hendricks; his cherished granddaughters, Kara and Kaylee; and his siblings, William, Henry, Maryann, Joseph, and Thomas. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Hilliard and Irene.

Bob's family will receive guests on Wednesday, November 20, from 2 - 7 pm. A  funeral service is planned for Thursday, November 21th, at 11:30 am, also at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington.
