Richard C.
Schmid
May 10, 1953 — Mar 28, 2025
Richard "Dick" Schmid, of Farmington Hills, loving and proud dad, papa, brother and friend, unexpectedly passed into eternal life on March 28, 2025. He was 71 years old. He was born on May 10, 1953, in Detroit, to the late Eugene and Jeanne (Gorris) Schmid.
Dick graduated from Brother Rice High School in 1971, before earning his business degree from Eastern Michigan University. After first meeting Mary Lou in elementary school, Dick and Mary Lou's friendship blossomed into high school sweethearts, and they were married in 1975 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Southfield. Together, they began their 32-year journey in student housing on EMU's campus before moving to Traverse City, then Dearborn Heights, and eventually settling in Farmington Hills.
Dick's professional life was defined by his long career with the S.S. Kresge Co., later known as Kmart. He managed several stores over the years and retired as a corporate buyer. His dedication to his work afforded his family many opportunities, and he was a steadfast provider, always prioritizing their well-being.
Above all, Dick was a man of simple pleasures and deep devotion to his family. He was kind, loyal, and hard-working, and those who knew him best remember a man who found joy in the little things, especially when it came to family moments. His children fondly recall the countless hours spent in the yard, where he patiently taught them to play catch. He was a proud father and adored being Papa to his grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable joy.
Dick was a passionate sports fan, particularly of Detroit's teams, and enjoyed hobbies such as bowling, softball, and fishing. One of his favorite traditions was annual fishing trips with his brothers and brothers-in-law.
Thoughtful and deeply caring, Dick was especially devoted to his parents and was incredibly close to his siblings. He was a rock for his family and epitomized the qualities of loyalty, honesty, and devotion.
The passing of his beloved Mary Lou in 2007 had a profound impact on him. He carried on her legacy by not only serving as the glue that held the family together but also by continuing to bring her signature baked beans to each and every family gathering. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, Papa, and friend.
Dick leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and a life well-lived. He will be missed by his children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family, and friends, all of whom were touched by his gentle and caring nature.
Dick is survived by three beloved children, Ryan (Paula) Schmid, Kevin (Tynisa) Schmid, and Sara (Dr. Leonel) Lopez; four cherished grandchildren, Trevor Harmes, Moe Mansfield, Silas Schmid and Leonel Lopez; five loving siblings, Eugene (Mary Beth) Schmid, Gregory (Diane) Schmid, Paul Schmid, Mary Elizabeth (Daniel) Markovich, and Catherine (David) Kalanik.
Family and friends may gather for visitation at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in downtown Farmington on Friday, April 4, from 2-8 pm. A time of prayer and remembrances is planned for 7:00 pm.
Dick's funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday morning, April 5th, at 10:00 am (in state at 9:30 am) at the Church of the Transfiguration, 25225 Code Road, Southfield.
A procession to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery will immediately follow mass.
Those who wish to further honor Dick's life are invited to contribute to the American Cancer Society .
