Obituary

Richard, of Farmington Hills, former owner of Freeman-Darling Construction Co., Livonia, entered eternal life at home on Monday evening, October 24, 2022. He was 92 years old.

Richard was born May 3, 1930, to the late Walter and Laura (Lewand) Lynch. He married Lynda J. (Sepanek) on October 2, 1965, at St. Basil Catholic Church, Eastpointe.

Richard was born and raised in Detroit and graduated from Southeastern High School and Wayne State University College of Engineering.  He was an active member of Theta Tau Fraternity and current alumnae, where he made many lifelong friends. Upon graduation from WSU, Richard enlisted as an officer in the United States Air Force where he served during the Korean War.
His professional career as a civil engineer started at O.W. Burke Co. where he managed a large construction project in Puerto Rico. Upon his return home, he met the love of his life, Lynda Sepanek, also his dental hygienist. They married in 1965. Soon after, Richard became part owner of Freeman-Darling Construction Co., until he retired in 1991. In 1968 he and Lyn adopted their daughter Julie.
Richard was the 50th President of the Associated General Contractors-Detroit Chapter, a Speaker at the Economic Club of Detroit, an Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, and a friend to many.
His life's joy has been his family, his cottage on Elk Lake, traveling the world, and their piece of paradise on Anna Maria Island.
He will be remembered for his integrity, loyalty, determination, and kindness. He had a smile that would light up a room, a story for every occasion, and a cocktail to toast on Friday. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 57 years, Lynda; devoted daughter, Julie (Russ) Lewis; adored grandchildren, Riley Christian and Erica Lyn Laycock; his sister, Dolores (the late Calvin) Matthews; sisters-in-law, Gail Sepanek and Sheryl Alef; brother-in-law, Ronald Sepanek; and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Patti Sepanek, brother-in-law, Donald Sepanek, and his niece, Laurel Matthews-Lechnyr.

The family will receive guests at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home on Thursday November 3, from 2-8 pm, with 7 pm prayers and remembrances.
