Obituary

Peter "PJ" Amato, 46, of Wixom, passed into eternal life on Friday morning, July 17, 2026, following a tragic swimming accident the previous weekend. He had been hospitalized at Henry Ford Hospital in Novi for several days.

PJ was born December 3, 1979, at Providence Hospital in Southfield, the son of the late Peter Amato and Leslie (Macdonald) Amato, and raised in Farmington. From a remarkably young age, PJ possessed a distinctive sense of style and took great pride in presenting himself well. His family fondly recalled that even at three years old, his shirt needed to be tucked in and his belt properly fastened. Long before his service in the United States Navy, PJ liked to be "squared away"—meticulous, well-groomed and always ready to help make certain that those around him were squared away, too.

PJ was funny, bold, audacious and wonderfully goofy. His quick wit and sometimes corny sense of humor could fill a room, and he especially enjoyed a joke that came close enough to the line to surprise everyone without quite crossing it. Behind his playful nature was an exceptionally kind and compassionate soul. He was naturally drawn to those who might feel overlooked or like the underdog, befriending them, encouraging them and helping them recognize their own worth. PJ wanted people to feel good about themselves, and he had a remarkable ability to make that happen.

Generous and selfless, PJ was always willing to help someone in need, whether it was a lifelong friend, a coworker or a person he had only just met. Friends described him as the kind of man who would give someone the shirt off his back. He checked on others, offered encouragement during difficult days and regularly stepped forward when someone needed a hand. His kindness was genuine, personal and offered without expectation of anything in return.

PJ was intelligent, capable and eager to learn. Whenever he undertook a new job or developed a new interest, he researched it thoroughly and quickly became proficient. He was highly regarded as a skilled technician whose knowledge, judgment and abilities helped protect the safety of those he served. His colleagues knew him as hardworking, motivated and determined—a man willing to persevere through situations from which many others might have walked away. They also treasured the humor, music and positive energy he brought to the workplace.

Above all else, PJ loved his family. He was a devoted father to Peyton and Genevieve and treasured the time he spent with them. They will especially remember relaxing beside their dad, watching movies, laughing and simply enjoying the comfort of being together. PJ was playful and affectionate, and he happily prepared favorite meals such as hot dogs and macaroni and cheese when that was what would bring a smile. Those ordinary moments became extraordinary memories because they were shared with him.

PJ also loved to cook and enjoyed experimenting with new recipes, sauces and culinary concoctions. Although his family admitted that not every experiment became an instant classic, most were very good, and all were created with imagination and enthusiasm. He had good taste, enjoyed trying something new and knew how to adjust his cooking to please the person seated at his table.

He possessed a tremendously strong work ethic and was happiest when he was active and useful. PJ loved being outdoors and frequently offered to help family members with yardwork, landscaping or maintaining their property. Although he lived in an apartment, he delighted in coming over and asking what needed to be cut, trimmed, repaired or improved. He took pride in making things look their best and found satisfaction in a productive day spent outside.

PJ was deeply family-oriented and fiercely protective of those he loved. Christmas Eve was his favorite celebration, largely because it brought together his large extended family. He cherished his cousins, aunts and uncles and treasured the laughter, traditions and togetherness they shared. His family could always count on him to help, to straighten a tie, calm a nervous moment, offer reassurance or simply stand beside them when he was needed most.

The many messages shared following PJ's accident reflect how broadly his goodness was felt. Friends and colleagues remembered his infectious smile, his incredible wit and his willingness to spread kindness even on difficult days. He was described as a ray of sunshine, a true friend to all, a wonderful human being and one of the kindest people many had ever known. One former colleague recalled that when she left a job, PJ helped carry her belongings to her car, congratulated her and gave her a hug—one seemingly simple act that perfectly represented the thoughtful person he was.

Even in death, PJ's generosity continued through the gift of organ donation, offering hope and renewed life to others. It was a final expression of the giving spirit that had defined him throughout his life.

PJ is survived by his devoted mother, Leslie; his cherished children, Peyton and Genevieve LeHue; his siblings, Nicole Amato and Joshua (Meredith) Amato; his niece, Naomi Amato; his uncles, George (Judy) Macdonald, David (the late Colleen) Macdonald and Scott Macdonald; his aunt, Lori Macdonald; as well as numerous cousins, colleagues and dear friends.

In addition to his father, Pete, PJ was preceded in death by his uncle, Donald Amato.

PJ's life was far too brief, but it was filled with humor, courage, hard work, generosity and love. His family and friends will forever remember his bold personality, meticulous appearance, playful spirit and extraordinary ability to make others feel valued. Most of all, they will remember a devoted father, loving son, protective brother and faithful friend who made the world brighter simply by being part of it.

Family and friends may gather at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in downtown Farmington on Monday, July 20th, where visiting hours are planned from 2-8 pm.  A funeral ceremony honoring PJ's life will commence at 7:00 pm.  Todd Lipa, LFC, will preside.

May he rest peacefully in eternal life, reunited with his father and held forever in the loving arms of God.
