Nelia Pilapil Samson, age 88, of Westland, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Henry Ford Hospital, West Bloomfield, MI. Born in Manila, Philippines, Nelia was a devoted wife, loving mother and sister, and cherished grandmother who touched the lives of those around her.
Nelia was born May 26, 1935, the daughter of the late Filomena and Carlos Pilapil.
Nelia was a lifelong Catholic, finding solace in her faith. She regularly attended the bible group at her beloved church, St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, where she formed lasting connections. Her commitment to her faith extended to attending various churches throughout her life.
In 1972, Nelia made the courageous journey to Detroit from Manila, with the hope of providing better opportunities for her family. Her resilience and determination paved the way for a brighter future. Nelia pursued her education in the Philippines, earning her Bachelor's degree and becoming an accomplished accountant. She dedicated many years of hard work to the Community Opportunity Center, where she ultimately retired.
Beyond her professional achievements, Nelia found joy in simple pleasures. She had a passion for the piano, cultivating beautiful gardens, and planting vibrant flowers. These hobbies reflected her appreciation for the beauty in life and her ability to find joy in the simple things in life.
Family was paramount to Nelia, and she treasured the moments spent with loved ones. Family vacations to Myrtle Beach and Boston became cherished traditions, providing opportunities for bonding and creating lasting memories. Her ultimate joy was experienced during family gatherings when her entire extended family, including children and grandchildren, came together.
Nelia will be remembered for her strength, her unwavering love for her family, and her contributions to both community and her profession. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, faith, and a deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures.
Nelia was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, Felino. She is the loving mother of Ferdinand (Erica), Felino Jr. (Elizabeth Thompson), Frederick and Franz (Shannon); beloved grandmother of Sydney, Nicollette, Kelsey, Alicia, Freddie, Spencer, Sophie, Jimmy, Dylan and Samuel; dearest sister of Lucinia, Azucena, Carmencita and Lito.
The Samson family will receive friends Friday, February 23, 3:00-8:00 pm, with a rosary at 7:00 pm at the funeral home.
A funeral mass celebrating Nelia's life will be Saturday, February 24, 10:00 am (in state 9:30 am), St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy Church, 8200 N. Wayne Rd, Westland, MI, 48185.
A funeral procession will take Nelia to her final resting place, Glen Eden Memorial Park, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
