Obituary

Myra Hoover, age 93, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2026. She was born in Oak Park, Illinois, to Owen Roy Shrigley and Hilda Shrigley (Westphal).

Myra's family moved when she was young, and she spent her formative years in Le Roy, Illinois, a small, rural farming town in the middle of the state. During some of the hot summers, Myra worked in the fields detasseling corn.

Myra went on to work in the Veterans' Office at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, where she met Charles "Chuck" Hoover, a discharged Army veteran. They were married on September 1, 1957, in Le Roy, Illinois.

Myra and Chuck lived briefly in West Lafayette, Indiana, where Myra worked in the Purdue University attorney's office while Chuck attended graduate school. They then moved to Middletown, Ohio, where Chuck began his first job after graduate school. Soon afterward, they moved to the Detroit area and purchased a newly built home in Southfield, Michigan, in 1964. There, they raised their two sons and have called home ever since.

Myra was a kindhearted soul, and the people she met were touched by how genuinely nice she was. Those who knew her well describe her as fantastic, welcoming, considerate, patient, perceptive, intelligent, and a good friend. When she had more energy for baking, her neighbors looked forward to receiving plates of Christmas cookies every year. Myra was also an active member of the churches she attended, most recently First Presbyterian Church of Farmington.

Despite her petite stature, Myra was remarkably strong. She took up running in her forties and was proud to have built her endurance enough to complete a marathon. She hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back to the rim in a single day, leaving people younger than her amazed at how quickly she climbed. She also embraced difficult challenges, including Half Dome in Yosemite and Angel's Landing in Zion.

Myra loved Dixieland jazz music and frequently enjoyed listening to live music in Ann Arbor and Frankenmuth.

Myra loved all animals, though she held a special place in her heart for dogs. She was a devoted dog parent to many dogs throughout her life, including Mimi, Sparky, Annie, and Beau.

Myra and Chuck traveled extensively, visiting all 50 states as well as destinations throughout Europe, Asia, and Australia and Oceania. Over the years, they took their family on many three-week driving trips across different regions of the United States, creating countless memories along the way. They particularly enjoyed hiking in the national parks, with the Great Smoky Mountains being a frequent destination.

Myra is survived by her husband, Chuck; her two sons, Marc and Eric (Claire); and her three grandchildren, Heather, Owen, and Alex.
