Obituary

Mary Margaret Sapienza, age 85, of Grand Blanc, passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2025, surrounded by family.

Born on December 24, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, she was the beloved daughter of the late Frank and Marian (Holstein) Monahan.

On September 5, 1960, Mary married the love of her life, Vito Sapienza. Together they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage, building a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support.

Mary was the most amazing mother—fiercely loving, deeply compassionate, and endlessly supportive. She had a heart as warm as her home-cooked meals, which she prepared with talent and joy. Her kitchen was a gathering place, where stories were shared, games were recapped, and everyone left full—in every sense of the word.

A true sports enthusiast, Mary was her children's number one fan, never missing a game. Whether cheering from the stands or shouting from the living room, she lived and breathed University of Michigan football and the Detroit Lions, always holding out hope for that next big win.

Those who knew Mary knew her as the quiet strength in the room—a rock with a velvet coating. Her nurturing spirit and steady love were constants in the lives of all who were lucky enough to know her. She gave generously, listened compassionately, and loved unconditionally.

Mary is the beloved wife of 64 years to Vito; loving mother of David (Berta) Sapienza, Denise (Ken) Loper, Stephen (Angie Roullier) Sapienza, Karen (Joseph) Elliott and Andrew (Mary) Sapienza; cherished grandmother of Matthew Loper, Scott Loper, Nick (Maggie) Sapienza, Noelle (Brandon) Satterfield, Blake Gilbert, the late Anthony Sapienza, Haley Sapienza, Madeline Sapienza and Logan Sapienza; great grandchildren, Monte, Deshawn and Henry; fond sister of Patricia (the late Al) Stepka, the late Sharon (Calvin) Bradley, Dorothy (Marc) Van Baalen, Kathy Wolfram, Nancy (Mark) Wollenweber, Maureen (John) Hoffman and William (Dodi) Monahan; numerous nieces and nephews.
