Mary Barbara Pociasek, age 93, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024.
Mary was a cherished soul who graced this world with her presence on May 7, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan. Born to the late George and Dorothy Pociasek, Mary embodied the spirit of her beloved city, often humorously claiming her origins in the "hood" with a twinkle in her eye.
Mary's journey was marked by an extraordinary blend of kindness, cooperation, and an ever-outgoing nature. She was a beacon of warmth and helpfulness, beloved by all who had the fortune to know her. Her academic pursuits led her to St. Casimir High School in Detroit, after which she proudly graduated from the Detroit College of Business. Her professional life saw her excel as an administrator at Decasma, a company operated by the US government, until her early retirement at the age of 55.
Despite retiring early, Mary remained vibrantly active. She delighted in the thrill of gambling on penny slots, cherished the peaceful retreats to Marsha and Tom's cottage, and embraced activities such as bowling and golfing with youthful enthusiasm. Her vivacious spirit was further exemplified by her dedication to her community, where she tirelessly volunteered for the Karmanos Cancer Inst., and drove her senior neighbors to their appointments, ensuring they were cared for and connected.
Mary was a true exemplar of Catholic principles, living a life that reflected her deep faith. She embodied the essence of helping others and putting their needs before her own. Her generosity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to service made the world her family, and her legacy of selflessness will be forever etched in the hearts of those who knew her.
Mary's life was a testament to the power of love, community, and an indomitable spirit. She leaves behind a world made better by her presence and a community forever grateful for her contributions. She will be deeply missed and eternally remembered.
Mary is survived by her loving nieces and nephews, Sheryl (the late Dennis) Deeg, Marsha (Thomas) Kaniowski, and Chris Pociask. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Michael Barnas, Catherine Barnas, John Barnas, Walter Pociask, Stanley Pociask, John Pociask, as well as nephews, Michael Kaniowski, Jerry Pociask, Gary Barnas, and nephew-in-law, Dennis Deeg.
A memorial mass celebrating Mary's life will take place on Thursday, May 23, 2024, 10 am (gathering from 9:15 – 10 am), at St. Colette Catholic Church, 17600 Newburgh Rd., Livonia, MI 48152.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen or the Solanus Casey Center to further honor Mary's life.
Please keep Mary in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
