Mary Catherine Martin (Espinosa), 89, of West Bloomfield, MI, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 24, 2023.

Cathy was born in Washington, DC, on July 23, 1933, the only child of the late José Edmundo Espinosa of Boulder, CO, and the late Margaret Mary Gallivan of Lexington, MO.  She spent her early years in Ithaca, NY, while her father completed his Ph.D. in Spanish Language and Literature. Then, the family moved to Detroit, where he became a professor at the University of Detroit. In wartime, the family moved to Bethesda, Maryland. After the war, they moved back to Detroit, where Cathy graduated from Gesu Elementary School, Our Lady of Mercy High School, and The University of Detroit. She later obtained a master's degree in history and a teaching certificate from the University of Michigan.  She did her student teaching in Ypsilanti and worked the remainder of her career in the Redford Union School district.

After retiring, she was a devoted homemaker and wife to Ceferino Martin; mother to Margaret (David Storm) Martin of Minneapolis, MN and Thomas (Sandra Jennifer Levine) Martin of Kensington, MD; Grandmother to Julian and Rafael. She was an active volunteer at her parish, St. Colman's, and her childrens' schools, St. Fabian, Our Lady of Sorrows, Mercy, and Brother Rice.  She was active in the pro-life movement in its early days, editing and writing for Right to Life- Lifespan of Michigan. From its beginning, she was active in the Mercy Alumnae Association.

A Memorial service is being planned for later this year in Sedalia, MO, where she will be laid to rest next to her mother.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
