Mary Jane
Hutsell
Aug 31, 1942 — Jun 12, 2026
West Bloomfield
Mary Jane Hutsell, 83, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Mary Jane was born on August 31, 1942, in Geneva, Nebraska, to Robert and Winona (Butler) Buchanan. She contracted polio at age 8 and through her strength of will and her family's care survived with only slight paralysis of her leg. It was this defining event that shaped her fierce love of life.
On September 20, 1969, she married Everett Lee Hutsell, in Hermiston, Oregon. Together they built a loving home in Livonia, Michigan and traveled the nation maintaining family relationships. Their marriage was blessed with many cherished memories and road trips until Everett's passing on February 26, 2020.
Mary Jane was known as a caring, big-hearted, and generous woman. She loved nature and enjoyed being in the Blue Mountains of Oregon at her family cabin. Her and Everett started the first year of their marriage living in the beauty of that cabin.
Throughout her life, Mary Jane was dedicated to serving others. While her children were in school, she volunteered in the library at Garfield Elementary and was also an active member of the Churchill Band Boosters. Later, she served as a technology assistant at Stevenson High School in the Livonia Public School District. Her commitment and compassion touched the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues. Her devotion to education extended beyond her professional work through her volunteer service with the PTSA. She also served for many years as administrator to St. Theodore's Catechism classes. She generously gave her time and talents to support learning and enrich her community.
Above all else, Mary Jane loved her family. Nothing brought her greater joy than spending time with her children and grandchildren. She treasured every family gathering, celebration, and shared moment, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
Mary Jane leaves behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, service, and love. Her warm smile, wise counsel, and compassionate heart will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Mary Jane is the loving mother of Stephanie (Dan) Sapakie, John (Analita Yap) Hutsell and Harry (Deanna) Hutsell; cherished grandmother of Michael Hutsell, Katrina Sapakie, Saniya Sapakie, Hailey Hutsell, Harrison Hutsell and Hunter Hutsell and dear aunt of four nieces and three nephews. In addition to her husband, Everett, Mary Jane was preceded in death by her brother, John R. "Jack" Buchanan.
The Hutsell family will receive guests on Friday, June 19, from 3-8 pm, at the funeral home.
A funeral service is planned for Saturday, June 20, 11 am, also at the funeral home.
Interment will immediately follow at Glen Eden Memorial Park in Livonia.
