Obituary

Margaret, of Farmington, passed into eternal life on Monday afternoon, January 12, 2026, at Corewell Health Farmington Hills Hospital.  She died just shy of her 100th birthday on March 7th.

Born in Grosse Pointe Village, Margaret lived for nearly an incredible century. From riding on horse carts to traveling by jet, from asking an operator to connect a call to navigating a cell phone, she was truly a part of the "Greatest Generation."

Margaret graduated from Detroit's Mackenzie High School. She was a child model and worked for Saks Fifth Avenue. During World War II, she served as a hostess with the USO and was also a weekend hostess on cruise ships throughout the Great Lakes. Following the war, she met Ralph Totton at Nardin Park Methodist Church. They were married in 1948, officiated by Dr. Reed, and were blessed with two children, Mary-Louise and Thomas Clifford.

At Nardin Park, Margaret was an active member of the Do Come Class, the Mr. & Mrs. Class, the Women's Society, Samaritan Ministries, and served as president of the CHF. She was also head of the nursery for several years. Beyond her church involvement, Margaret devoted significant time to community service. She was a member of the Redford Suburban League since 1962 and served as its president. She was a Girl Scout leader for a decade, served on PTA committees, and was a member of the Eastern Star, including serving as Worthy Matron. Margaret was a member of Nardin Park from 1930 to 1953, and again from the 1970s until the present. She was also an active member of Redford United Methodist Church from 1953 to 1972.

After raising her children, Margaret earned an associate's degree from Schoolcraft College and worked as a medical secretary for two private medical practices. Prior to having children, she studied at Wayne State University and worked as a secretary for Stroh Brewery, Monsanto Chemicals, and General Motors.

Following the loss of her beloved husband, Ralph, in 1998, Margaret lived independently until just recently. She enjoyed traveling, working puzzles, keeping up with local sports teams, and making friends wherever she went. Although she did not quite reach her 100th birthday on March 7, her celebration of life will be held on that date at Nardin Park.

The Totton family will receive guests at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in downtown Farmington on Sunday afternoon, January 25th, from1-4 pm.

Margaret's funeral ceremony is planned for Saturday morning, March 7th, at 11:00 am, at Nardin Park United Methodist Church, 29887 West Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills.

Private interment will take place at Acacia Park Cemetery, Beverly Hills.

Memorial tributes are suggested to the Nardin Park United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.
