Lynda Marie
Gerard
Aug 29, 1943 — Apr 18, 2025
Lynda Marie Gerard, age 81, of Howell, formerly of Farmington Hills, passed into eternal life at her home on the morning of Good Friday, April 17, 2025, with the peace and grace she so beautifully embodied in life.
Lynda was born on August 29, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Ernst and Dorothy (Burrows) Syerson. She married the love of her life, Walter F. Gerard, on May 15, 1965. Their nearly 60 years of marriage were filled with deep devotion, shared laughter, and a boundless zest for life.
An avid swimmer and biker, Lynda lived with energy and enthusiasm. Her love of music found a home in the choir at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Howell, where her voice was a source of joy and reverence. She and Walt were also longtime members of St. Alexander Church in Farmington Hills, where they attended Mass for 34 years and served faithfully on the Parish Council, finding deep meaning and purpose in their Sunday worship and community service.
Lynda's adventurous spirit was unmatched. A proud fan of the Detroit Tigers, she also loved to travel. She and Walt enjoyed 32 cruises—beginning with their very first on the iconic Love Boat—and ventured overseas an astounding 55 times. Through these travels, they collected memories, friendships, and a shared sense of wonder at the world.
Life brought both joy and sorrow. Lynda and Walt experienced the heartbreaking loss of a stillborn baby boy on January 15, 1966. Exactly one year later, on that same date in 1967, they welcomed their son Matthew. Later, their family grew with the birth of their second son, Bradley. With their sons by their side, they began a lifetime of adventures and joyful moments together. Lynda now looks forward to reuniting with her first little boy in heaven.
After moving to Howell in 2007, Lynda found a new rhythm of life. She nurtured her beautiful gardens, became active in the Howell Theatre, served on the Howell Beautification Commission, and stayed active at Curves. Her days were full, her heart open, and her presence in the community deeply felt.
Lynda's strength and resilience shone brightly throughout her life. In 1998, she bravely faced breast cancer and was declared cured in May 1999. For many years, she continued to thrive, refusing to let that chapter define her. In October of 2022, Lynda was diagnosed with an aggressive recurrence of breast cancer. She met this challenge with courage and grace, declaring that she had fought the good fight. Her greatest sorrow was leaving Walt behind, but she found comfort in the belief that he will one day join her in heaven, where their love story will continue.
Lynda's legacy is one of joy, love, laughter, music, faith, and adventure. She extends her heartfelt thanks to all who supported Walt, Brad, and the rest of her family during this time. She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
Family and friends may gather to honor Lynda's life at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in downtown Farmington on Saturday, June 7, with visiting hours planned for 1-3 pm and a memorial ceremony planned to begin at 3:00 pm. Memorial tributes are suggested to the Howell Nature Center.
"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away." Lynda created countless such moments.
