Obituary

Lucille, of Wixom, our loving Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, sister, aunt and friend, passed into eternity on Thursday morning, February 15, 2024. She was 98 1/2 years old.

Lucille was born in Highland Park on June 17, 1925, to Armenian immigrants who had fled the Armenian Genocide. Growing up during the Great Depression taught Lucille skills that she would use her entire life and carry her through challenging times.  On October 12, 1942, at the tender age of 17, she eloped with her parent's permission and married 19 yr old Robert McCormick. They enjoyed only a few months as newlyweds before Bob was drafted into WWII. During the war, Lucy worked in Detroit as a "Rosie the Riveter", manufacturing planes and other equipment for the armed forces. Upon Robert's return from the war, they started their family and raised six children.

Lucille was a woman of remarkable strength and resilience. She approached life with hard work and tenacity that was truly inspiring. Her work ethic was unparalleled, and she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to everything she pursued. Lucille's creativity and resourcefulness were evident in every aspect of her life, from her professional endeavors to her multiple interests and hobbies.

A faithful Christian, Lucille instilled her faith in her children, taking them to church and providing them with a strong foundation that shaped their lives.  Lucy was a lifelong learner who was always reading, listening and talking with others. Buying and selling real estate, gardening, sewing, cooking and investing were also among Lucille's passions. She was a savvy businesswoman, known for her tough negotiating skills. Her determination and financial acumen enabled her to achieve, among many things, the remarkable feat of purchasing their first home in Highland Park with $5000 in cash, a testament to her disciplined approach to savings and hard work when WWII had ended.

The family cottage on Cass Lake held a special place in Lucille and her family's heart, where countless memories were created and cherished. Hot summer days brought laughter, love, food, and family—a testament to her commitment to creating a strong family bond. She and her husband also created a love for travel and sense of adventure for their family through countless family vacations.

Even after being widowed in 1990, Lucille remained a social and outgoing presence in the lives of those around her. She cherished relationships and valued staying connected with family and friends. The importance of family was paramount to Lucille, and she consistently made efforts to keep the bonds strong. Visiting loved ones and maintaining close ties brought her joy, and a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Lucille was unabashedly herself, spirited, fiercely independent and fully loved her family. She is already deeply missed by her family and will be by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, faith, and the importance of cherishing family. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love that she so freely gave during her remarkable 98 years of life.

Lucille was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Robert; a son, George (Kathy) McCormick; a daughter, Diana (the late Jimmie) Fletcher; a granddaughter, Angela Barksdale; and brothers, John and Harry Haboian.  Surviving are four children, Jim (Mary) McCormick, Patricia (Steve) Barnes, Roberta (the late Kevin) Barksdale, and Christine (John) Fletcher; her sister, Ruth (the late Greg) Acir; grandchildren, Colleen and Kelly McCormick, James (Sarah) McCormick, Christina (Nick) Mayer,  April and Timothy Fletcher, Hannah, Joshua and Krisztina Barnes, Kimberly and Brandon Barksdale, and Jacob (Lyn), Austin (Christina), and Tyler Fletcher; as well as great-grandchildren, Isaac, Owen and Luke McCormick, Alison, Ashley and Benjamin Mayer, Adam Fletcher, Jadyn Perfetto, Zina and Xander Fletcher, and another Fletcher baby due in April.

Lucille's funeral ceremony is planned for Saturday morning, February 24, at 11:30 am, at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington.  The family will receive guests from 9:30 am until the start of her 11:30 am ceremony.
