Loretta
Belcher
Apr 28, 1930 — Mar 12, 2025
Alice, known by most as "Loretta", of Detroit, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital. She was 94 years old.
Born April 28, 1930, in Boswell, PA, to the late Louis (Aloysius) Dietrick and Mary (Budzina) Dietrick, a coal miner and his devoted wife, Loretta was raised on a farm in Jennerstown, PA, one of the youngest of 11 children, where she developed her work ethic and fierce independence. At times, she would proudly claim to be the best potato picker in the whole of Pennsylvania, a testament to her hard work and determination from an early age.
At 16, Loretta left the farm and moved to Detroit, following the lead of one of her older sisters, where she embarked on a new, exciting chapter of city life. Never one to shy away from challenges, she told her employer she was 18 to secure a factory job, eventually becoming a riveter — the decision highlights the beginning of her "life in the big city". It was in Detroit where she met the love of her life, Orville, who pulled over to offer her a ride one day. After a few meetings, she agreed to a date with him, eventually leading to holy matrimony on July 7, 1950, at a church in Detroit. Their love story lasted until Orville's passing on March 31, 1991.
In the early 1970s, Loretta & Orville purchased Emily's Bar on Warren Avenue, also in Detroit. Orville, ever the romantic, renamed it "Loretta's Bar" in honor of his beloved wife in the late 1980s. Loretta continued to run the bar even after Orville's death, showing her resilience and determination. She eventually sold the bar and retired in the late 1990s.
Loretta was diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2001 and, true to her character, fought through it, thriving for many more years, displaying an inspiring tenacious spirit. Throughout her life, Loretta was fiercely devoted to her family. She was loving, selfless, and generous, always putting the needs of others before her own. She had a remarkable ability to put most at ease; her unwavering support made her a pillar of strength for her family and friends.
A woman of great humor and wit, Loretta was known for her independent spirit. Even in her 90s, while living at Brookdale Senior Living, she would fondly refer to everyone else as "the old people" while still maintaining a lively and engaging presence with her neighbors. She had a sharp mind, loving puzzles, crime dramas, & scary old movies. Music was always playing in her home, especially Elvis, whose songs she adored. Loretta had striking red hair and green eyes that captured the attention of many; she was often revered for her beauty and youthful appearance throughout her long life.
Loretta was a Bible reader with a deep spiritual connection, often reflecting on passages that were meaningful to her. Her faith was an integral part of her life, guiding her through both joys and challenges. Despite not particularly enjoying cooking, she always made sure to feed her loved ones, a small but cherished act of love she carried with her throughout her life.
Her legacy is one of resilience, kindness, and devotion. She will be remembered for her strength, her generosity, and the indelible mark she left on all who knew her.
Loretta was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Orville, and is survived by her son, Bradley (Valerie), grandchildren, Brandy Sara Belcher, and Bradley (Siria) Belcher II; great-grandchildren, Savannah and Landon Belcher; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was joyfully awaiting the birth of her third great-grandchild in the coming weeks. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by ten siblings.
Family and friends may gather for visitation at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington, on Thursday, March 27, from 3-8 pm, with 7 pm prayers and remembrances.
