Obituary

Lee Spence, age 94, of Livonia, passed away on November 7, 2023. He was born June 12, 1929, in Hamtramck, Michigan to the late Wilson and Maye (Harris) Spence. Lee's journey was filled with love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for life's simple pleasures.

Lee was known not only for his legal acumen but also for his kind, patient, and loving nature. He was a man who treasured the small joys in life, particularly his wife, Donna's, cooking. Her turkey burgers were his absolute favorite, and he had an unwavering passion for pizza, never encountering a bad slice in his lifetime.

A man of diverse tastes, Lee had a love for music that spanned from rock to bluegrass, including The Who, Dire Straits, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He also found solace and joy in taking leisurely garden walks amidst beautiful flowers with his beloved wife. The sunflower was his favorite.

One of Lee's defining qualities was his sense of humor, which brightened the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His laughter was infectious, and his ability to find humor in life's challenges was truly remarkable.

Lee's family held a special place in his heart. He was a loving father to his son, Gary, and enjoyed spending his time with Donna's children, their spouses, and grandchildren. His dedication to family extended to his membership at Grace Lutheran Church, in Redford, where he found a community of faith and love.

Lee bravely served our country in the United States Air Force, reaching the rank of Captain. In addition to his legal and military achievements, Lee was a true "foodie" who reveled in the simple pleasure of free samples at Costco, a testament to his ability to find delight in life's small joys. His memory will forever be cherished by those who knew him, and his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of family, friends, and the community he touched.

As we say our final goodbyes to Lee, we remember the warmth of his smile, the echoes of his laughter, and the love he shared with all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to bring comfort and inspiration to those who loved him.

Lee is survived by his loving wife, Donna Spence; dear son, Gary Spence; Donna's children, Gary (Mary Beth) Kerstein, Mark (Jeanna) Kerstein, Scott (Carolyn) Kerstein, and Janis (Duane) Lanyon; Donna's grandchildren, Zachary Kerstein, Jacob Lanyon, Evan Kerstein, Justin Lanyon, Maxwell Kerstein, John Kerstein, Nicholas Kerstein, and Jeremy Kerstein.

Family and friends may gather for a visitation at Heeney-Sundquist on Friday, November 10, from 4-8pm.

Lee's funeral service will be celebrated Saturday morning, November 11, at 11 am (in state 10 am) at Grace Lutheran Church, 25630 Grand River Ave, Redford Charter Twp, MI 48240.

Immediately following the funeral service, a funeral procession will take Lee to his final place of rest, Glen Eden Memorial Park.

Donations may be directed to American Heart Association or Grace Lutheran Church, in Redford, to further honor Lee's life.
