Obituary

Laurence D. McMillan, a talented artist, devoted sports fan, gifted singer, and a man who found joy in the simple things in life, passed away unexpectedly at his apartment. He was born on April 4, 1951, the beloved son of the late Samuel D. McMillan and Margaret (Bray) McMillan.

Laurence was a truly gifted artist. He possessed a remarkable natural ability to draw freehand, creating pictures from his imagination and bringing what he saw around him to life on paper. His talent came naturally to him, and his artwork was a reflection of the creativity and individuality that made Laurence such a special person. He had a remarkable gift for drawing and a way of expressing himself through his art that was uniquely his own.

Laurence also loved being outdoors and experiencing the world around him. For many years, one of his favorite ways to get around was by bicycle. He loved riding his bike and could often be found making his way from one place to another, enjoying the freedom and independence that came with being on the road. His bicycle was more than simply a means of transportation—it was part of the way Laurence experienced life.

A lifelong Detroit sports fan, Laurence proudly followed his hometown teams. He loved the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and Detroit sports in general. He enjoyed watching the games, following his favorite teams, and cheering them on. Sports were one of the many things that brought Laurence happiness and gave him something to look forward to.

And then there was karaoke.

Laurence loved to sing. He was a talented karaoke singer and genuinely enjoyed taking the microphone and performing the songs he loved. Karaoke gave Laurence an opportunity to express himself, have fun, and share his personality with the people around him. He did not simply listen to music—he became part of it. His love of singing was another way Laurence's talents and joyful spirit could shine through.

Laurence spent much of his young life in Clair, Michigan. After his father passed away, his mother moved to Warren, Michigan, where Laurence continued to live for many years. Following his mother's passing, Laurence lived with his sister, Georgina, and his brother-in-law, Carl Wilkinson, in both Southfield and Farmington Hills. His family was an important part of his life, providing him with a home filled with companionship and care.

Eventually, Laurence moved to Thomas Taylor Apartments in Westland, where he quickly became a familiar and well-loved part of the community. Laurence was never simply another resident. He made friends with the people around him, and those friendships meant a great deal. Everyone at the apartments knew Larry, and he was liked and cared about by so many of his neighbors and friends there. He had a way of becoming part of the community, and the people who shared that community with him will remember his presence, his personality, and the everyday moments they shared with him.

Laurence was a man who experienced the world in his own way. Living with special needs, he possessed a perspective and personality all his own. Those who knew Larry understood that beneath his quiet moments was a man with tremendous talent, strong interests, and a genuine ability to find happiness in the things he loved. He did not need a complicated life to find meaning. A pencil and a piece of paper, a bicycle ride, a Tigers or Lions game, a favorite song, or a microphone at karaoke could be enough to make a good day a great one.

There was something wonderfully authentic about Larry. He was himself—an artist, a singer, a sports fan, a bicycle rider, a friend, and a man who enjoyed the familiar things that brought him happiness. His talents were special, but so was the way he approached life. He leaves behind memories of his creativity, his love of Detroit sports, his music, his independence, and the unmistakable personality that made him Larry.

Though his passing was unexpected, the life Larry lived was filled with moments that mattered. His artwork, his songs, his favorite teams, his bicycle rides, his friendships, and the memories shared with those who cared for him will remain part of the story of his life.

Larry will be remembered not simply for the challenges he faced, but for the gifts he possessed—the ability to create, to sing, to enjoy, to cheer, to make friends, and to find his own way through the world. He had a special place in the lives of those who knew him, and his absence will be felt by the many people who came to know and care for him.

Larry is survived by his loving siblings, Gary (Jacqueline) McMillan, Sharon (Harold) Galloway, and Linda Harvey; as well as many adored nieces and nephews, dear friends, neighbors, and all those whose lives he touched throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel D. and Margaret (Bray) McMillan; his siblings, Georgina (Carl) Wilkinson, James (Nancy) McMillan, Richard McMillan, and Sandra (the late Richard) Hoisington; brothers-in-law, Harold Galloway and Richard Hoisington; sister-in-law, Patricia McMillan; and other beloved family members whose memories remain cherished.

A visitation for Larry will be held on Friday, August 28, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Family and friends are invited to come together, share stories, remember Larry, and celebrate his life.

Please keep Larry and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

May Larry now have an endless road ahead of him, a favorite song playing in the background, a Tigers or Lions game to cheer on, and the freedom to keep doing all the things that brought him happiness. Most of all, may he be remembered for the unique, talented, kind, and unforgettable person he was.
