Kevin Thomas
Rushford
Nov 25, 1982 — Nov 21, 2023
The world lost a cherished soul on a seemingly ordinary Tuesday morning, November 21, 2023, when Kevin Rushford, at the age of 40, departed this life unexpectedly at the Detroit Lions Headquarters & Training Facility in Allen Park. Born on November 25, 1982, at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Kevin entered this world to the joy of his parents, Robert Rushford and Margaret MacDonald, both of whom he held dear to his heart.
Proud of his Irish heritage, Kevin celebrated the spirit of his ancestry in many things he did. He navigated life with a passion for sports, a love for culinary arts, and an unwavering dedication to family. His journey began at Novi High School, where he excelled both on the football field and in wrestling, leaving an indelible mark among his peers and coaches.
After graduating in 2001, Kevin pursued his passion for culinary arts at the Schoolcraft Culinary Arts Program in Livonia. His career took him through various chef positions across Michigan and Texas, where his talent and dedication shone brightly in every kitchen he graced.
A fervent sports enthusiast, some would say Kevin's heart belonged to U of M football, the Detroit Lions, and the game of golf. His love for sports extended beyond the screen, as in 2023, he attained his dream job as a chef for the Detroit Lions organization. This role allowed him the daily joy of interacting with the players he admired.
Yet, beyond his professional achievements, Kevin's greatest pride and joy was his 12-year-old daughter, Grace. He was a devoted father, guiding and supporting her through life's journeys, particularly cheering her on during her recent cheerleading season. His love for Grace was immeasurable, and her happiness meant the world to him.
Kevin's kindness and selflessness touched everyone he met. He was known for his humor, his big heart, and his innate ability to put others before himself. He held a special place in his heart for his mother, Margaret, always ensuring he made time for her amidst his busy life. Moreover, Kevin went to nearly every Lions home game with his dad, Bob. Even after the start of his employment with the Lions he still went to or watched every single game - this was very important to him, equally as important as the time he spent with his mom.
His zest for life was evident in his passion for the U of Michigan vs. Ohio State Football game, an annual tradition often coinciding with his birthday. The memory of his family surprising him with tickets to that game for his 21st birthday remained etched in his heart. Kevin loved the movie "Rudy," a reminder of his unyielding dream to play college football.
Kevin Rushford leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and kindness. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
As we bid farewell to Kevin, let us remember his laughter, his warmth, and the light he brought into the lives of those around him. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his love continue to guide and inspire us all.
In addition to his parents and daughter, Kevin is survived by his siblings, William "Bill" Rushford and Meredith (Daniel) Swaine; nephew, Zachary Rushford; nieces, Abigail Rushford, and Molly and Karly Swaine; and his sister-in-law, Michelle Rushford.
Family and friends may gather at the Heeney-Sundquist for visitation on Wednesday, November 29, from 2-8 pm, with a time for spoken remembrances at 7:00 pm.
Kevin's funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday afternoon, November 30, at 12 noon, at St. Kenneth Catholic Church, 14951 Haggerty Rd., (south of Five Mile Road), Plymouth. A procession to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, will follow his mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Kevin Rushford Memorial Trust (Meredith Swaine, Trustee of the Kevin Rushford Memorial Trust F/B/O Grace Rushford U/T/A dated November 22, 2023).
Kindly keep Kevin and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this terribly difficult time.
