Obituary

Kathleen Louise Radzilowski passed into the arms of the Lord surrounded by family on April 6, 2025, at the age of 90.

Kathleen was born in 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest child of John D. and Hildegarde Pliska. She grew up on Whitfield Street in Detroit amid family and friends. She loved to read and to roller skate and was a big fan of the Detroit Red Wings during the Gordie Howe era. She attended Catholic school at St. Joseph's and St. Cecilia's. While in high school she contracted polio and completed her senior year from her hospital bed. She went to Wayne State University, earning a teaching certificate and a master's degree in psychology. Kathleen worked as a teacher in Detroit Public Schools and as a secretary in the Fisher Building. She loved art, visiting the DIA, and Detroit's jazz scene, attending many memorable performances at clubs in the late 1950s and early 1960s. While at Wayne State, she joined the Sarmatian (Polish) Club and met Thaddeus Radzilowski. They were married in 1964, following Thaddeus' military service in Vietnam and Okinawa. They lived in Ann Arbor as well as Tiffin, Ohio. While in Ann Arbor, they welcomed sons John and Paul to their family. In 1970, they moved to Marshall, Minnesota, where Thaddeus was a professor of history at Southwest Minnesota State University. In Marshall, they welcomed their son Stefan. Kathleen was active in several organizations including Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life and Feminists for Life and taught occasional courses at the university. She became an avid gardener and spent much time supporting and advising her husband and teaching her sons about art, music, poetry, and life. The family also lived for two years in northern Virginia where she worked for the well-known Catholic author Michael Novak and Thaddeus worked for the National Endowment for the Humanities before returning to Marshall. During the late 1980s and early 1990s she was a social worker for Regional 8 North Social Services, inspecting and licensing home day care providers in southwest Minnesota. In 1995, she and Thaddeus returned to Michigan after Thaddeus accepted the position of president of St. Mary's College in Orchard Lake, Michigan. She enjoyed reading, especially mysteries and British literature, gardening, painting, and music.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mary Shipley and Francine (John) Castle, brothers Thomas and John, husband Thaddeus, and nephew William Shipley and niece Ann Crotty. She is survived by her sons John, Paul, and Stefan (Agnieszka) Radzilowski, grandchildren Radek and Diana, as well as many nieces and nephews.
