Karen Marie Sawulski, age 65, of Garden City, passed away August 29, 2023, at Michigan Medicine with her loving family by her side.
Karen was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Dewitt Wilkerson, Albert Wethington, and Lois (Titschler) Wethington.
Karen was a remarkable woman whose vibrant spirt illuminated the lives of all who knew her. A devoted family woman, Karen's love for music and dancing was only surpassed by her boundless capacity to give selflessly to others. She embodied the values of faith, love, and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts she touched.
A true woman of God, Karen's unwavering faith served as a guiding light, illuminating her path, and inspiring those around her. Her commitment to health and fitness was a testament to her dedication to a well-balanced life, evident in her love for workouts and her preference for standing while eating. Karen's presence was calming in times of need, her generosity and open heart making her the go-to-person for solace and support.
A protective guardian of her family, Karen's fierce love knew no bounds. Her patience, acceptance, and nurturing nature endeared her to all generations. Adventurous by nature, she had a profound love for the water, finding serenity and exhilaration on jet skis and embracing the waves. Her deep connection with Ray, was a testament to the power of lifelong friendship and love. Their journey, from childhood to lifelong partners, was true devotion that transcended time and distance.
Karen's strength shone even brighter in the face of adversity. Her brave battle with pancreatic cancer showcased her unwavering determination and resilience. Her love for playing the lottery was a joyful reminder of her zest for life, embracing every moment with boundless energy that rivaled even the most tireless of beings.
In her passing, Karen leaves a legacy of love, strength, and selflessness. Her memory will forever remind us to cherish family, nurture faith, and live with a heart open to others. Karen's life was a masterpiece of love. Although she has moved on from this world, her light will forever shine within us.
Karen is survived by her adored children, Steven (Amy) Sawulski, Christina (Jeffrey) Osowski, Richard (Chante) Sawulski, and Brandon Ray Bitner; devoted finance, Ray Bitner; beloved grandchildren, Steven Sawulski Jr., Melissa Sawulski, Allyson Sawulski, Britney Sawulski, Trevor Romano, Isabella Romano, Richard Sawulski Jr., Arielle Sawulski, and Ava Sawulski; dear siblings, Brian (Kristy) Wilkerson, Kenneth (Deborah) Wilkerson, Catherine Martinez, Theresa (John) Hosier, Connie Lafreniere, Tracy Wilkerson, Marc (Kaye) Wilkerson, and Laura (Mikel) Wilkerson-Pope. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dewitt Wilkerson, Albert Wethington and Lois (Titschler) Wethington; and sister, Vicki Wilkerson.
The Sawulski families will receive guests at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington, on Friday, September 1, from 4 – 8 pm.
Karen's funeral is planned for Saturday morning, September 2, at 10:30 am also at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home.
Interment will follow at Parkview Memorial Gardens.
