Karen Anne
Macdonald
May 28, 1959 — Apr 3, 2026
Farmington Hills
Karen Anne MacDonald, of Farmington Hills, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 3, 2026, at the age of 66.
Born on May 28, 1959, in Columbus, Ohio, Karen was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas J. and Barbara A. (Backus) MacDonald.
Karen's life was marked by resilience, joy, and a remarkable ability to bring light to those around her. As a young girl growing up in Hilliard, Ohio, she was honored as an Easter Seals poster child—a reflection of her strength and the inspiration she would become to so many. Her family later moved to Elmhurst, Illinois, then eventually to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where Karen attended Lahser High School, and eventually to Franklin, Michigan. For the past twelve years, Karen resided at Wagner House, part of the Community Living Centers (CLC), where she was cared for with compassion and where she formed meaningful friendships.
Karen truly was a ray of sunshine. She had a warm and engaging spirit, and she found joy in the simple but meaningful moments of life. She loved shopping, playing Bingo, and going out to eat—especially because it meant spending time with others. Known as a "buddy to all," Karen had a special gift for companionship. She made people feel seen, valued, and never alone.
Music was one of Karen's great passions. She took voice lessons and practiced faithfully, developing a beautiful singing voice. She performed in many events and talent shows. One of her proudest moments was singing the National Anthem before a Detroit Red Wings game!
Karen was naturally curious and inquisitive, always wanting to understand how things worked. She shared many treasured experiences with her parents, including photography outings, time spent at the RC flying field, and family vacations.
Karen was a longtime participant and worker at New Horizons, where she spent many fulfilling years.
Karen's life, though unique in its journey, was rich in love, connection, and joy. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, warmth, and a gentle reminder of the beauty found in simply being present for one another.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Karen is the loving sister of Theresa I. (Jeffrey A.) Gekeler; dear niece of Mary Jane Backus; fond cousin of many and also leaves behind many friends, and her "family" at the Community Living Centers.
Karen's family will receive guests on Tuesday, April 7, 4-7 pm, at the funeral home.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 8, 11 am (in state 10:15 am) at St. Owen Catholic Church, 6869 Franklin Road, Bloomfield Hills.
A luncheon at the church will follow Mass.
Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
Memorial tributes are suggested to the Community Living Centers .
