Obituary

Joy Marie Fischer passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family — the very people she dedicated her life to nurturing, celebrating, and uplifting. Her departure leaves a hole in the hearts of all who knew her, but her legacy of grace, perseverance, and unconditional love will live on for generations.

Joy was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on July 25, 1951, the daughter of the late Rita LaDuke (Saxton). She was the adored wife of nearly 56 years to Vietnam veteran Richard Fischer, standing by his side with unwavering devotion and pride. Together, they built a life rooted in family, service, and love.

A lifelong volunteer, Joy gave generously of her time and heart. She was an active member of the VFW in Northville and the Ladies Auxiliary, and also served at the DAV in Ann Arbor, supporting veterans and their families with quiet strength and compassion. She led as a Girl Scout leader, helping shape the lives of young girls with the same kindness, creativity, and care she showed in every role she played.

Joy was a true matriarch — fiercely loyal, endlessly loving, and always present. She never missed a single event for her children or grandchildren. Birthdays were sacred in her home, each one marked by a lovingly prepared favorite meal. Her signature touch? A breakfast-for-dinner spread featuring her famous pancakes — made with joy and always served with a smile.

Her favorite colors — light lavender, sunny yellow, and vibrant turquoise — perfectly mirrored her spirit: gentle, warm, and full of life. A perfectionist with a tender heart, Joy found peace in her garden. She lovingly tended to her vegetables and flowering plants, creating a vibrant space that reflected the beauty she brought into the world. Butterflies were a frequent visitor, seeming to sense the gentle soul who welcomed them.

Family was everything to Joy. She not only raised her own with tireless love but extended that love to friends, neighbors, and anyone in need. Her home was a sanctuary — open to all, warm with welcome, and filled with laughter. As those who knew her often said, "Joy was like apple pie — everyone loved her."

Despite a difficult upbringing and the loss of her mother at a young age, Joy's strength never wavered. She overcame every obstacle with dignity and courage, embodying the story of perseverance, grace, and love. Though she grew up fast, she always kept the heart of a child — playful, hopeful, and generous beyond measure.

She was not just a caregiver; she was the caregiver — to family, to friends, and to her community. She lived by a simple but powerful motto: "Family first, whatever it takes."

Joy Marie Fischer was deeply loved — and she loved deeply in return. Her legacy is etched in every birthday breakfast, every blooming flower, every warm hug, and every life she touched.

She is survived by her adored husband of almost 56 years, Richard; her loving daughters, Tina (John) Purdom and Janette (John) Leppek; her grandchildren, Cristian (Morgan), Kyle, Aubrey, Morgan, Payton, and Evelyn; her cherished great-grandchildren, Greyson and Gabriella; her bonus grandchildren, Devin, Trey, Cam, and Chase, whose love, dedication, and care was special to Grammy Joy; her siblings, Rick, Bonnie (Frank), and Judy; her sister-in-law, Sharon Fischer; her dear nieces and nephews, Heather, Michelle, David, Michael, Tammy, Melissa, and Tanya; and her daytime bestie, Samantha.

A visitation will take place on Saturday, from 2:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home. Visitation will continue on Sunday at 10:00 AM, until the time of Joy's funeral service at 12:00 PM, also at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home.
