Obituary

Joseph E. Wolff, age 93, of Farmington Hills, passed away peacefully Friday, September 16, 2022, at Beaumont Hospital, Farmington Hills Campus.

Joe was born in Chicago, IL, on October 9, 1928, the son of the late Brigid and Carl Wolff.

Joe lived a full life, working and spending summers in Michigan and spending winters in the warm climate of Mesa, AZ.  He graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School and the University of Detroit, earning a bachelor's degree in Journalism.  Before he could start his career in the newspaper, he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War, where he served as an artillery observer.  Following his honorable discharge, he began his 25-year career with the Detroit News,  working in various journalist capacities, most notably as a crime reporter and an editor.  He then worked as a freelance writer and then eventually ended his writing career at the Sports Afield, an American Outdoor Magazine.  After his writing career had ended Joe began his career as a charter boat captain.  He was a USCG licensed captain and was past president of the Michigan Charter Boat Association.  Joe and Ann would charter fishermen for over 30 years on Lake Michigan where they spent their summers together.

Sadly, Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann, with whom he shared most of his charter boat life,  as well as his son, Stephen.

He is survived by nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

Joe will also be deeply missed by his neighbors, Shirley and Norm Peterson.  The Petersons cared for Joe and did many chores for him after Ann had passed away and their love was noticed by all his friends.  He will also be missed by Mary Dean Bowling, who held a special place in Joe's heart.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday morning, September 29, 10 am (gathering after 9 am), at St. Gerald Catholic Church, 21300 Farmington Rd, Farmington, MI 48336.

In lieu of flowers please make donations in Joseph's name to either St Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Fr. Solanus Casey Center.
