John Douglas
Balogh
Oct 10, 1930 — Sep 10, 2024
Heathrow
On Tuesday September 10th, 2024, John Douglas Balogh passed away in Lake Mary, Florida one month before his 94th birthday. He was born on October 10th, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio where he lived with his siblings Dick and Jim and Gerry and Carol, they called him Doug as did everyone else while he was growing up.
During his youth, Doug played basketball and football. During halftime he would run into the stands to play the sousaphone for the Saint Stanislaus High School Band, then return to the field for the second half of the football game. In later life, he continued to be a great athlete as an avid golfer and bowler, and proudly displayed his trophies.
Doug joined the Marine Corps in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954. In those brief three years, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 stars and the United Nations Medal. Most importantly, Japan is where Doug met Hiroko Kawahara and where they were married on December 7th, 1953, in Kobe Japan. Together they traveled to Hawaii and San Francisco. They then landed in Detroit, Michigan where they raised their 5 children, Douglas, Debra (Robert), Timothy (Shelagh), Anne (Philip) and Diane (who preceded him in death).
As a father, Doug was a member of the St. Eugene's Dads Club and umpired baseball games. He also made sure he fit everyone into a blue Ford Falcon and took family vacations to the Smoky Mountains, Washington DC, Mackinaw Island, and a "Civil War" trip, to name a few.
Doug joined the Detroit Police Department in 1954, was promoted to Detective in 1969 and Sergeant in 1970 and received a Commendation Award in 1972 along with fellow officers for saving a life. While working, Doug attended the Detroit Institute of Technology where he received his accounting degree. He retired from the police force in 1988 after 34 years of service. Doug and Hiroko moved to Florida in 2003 for its sunny days and warmer winters and sadly, Hiroko preceded him in death in 2012. Moreover, he is the proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, September 16, 12 pm, (visitation beginning at 11 am), at the funeral home.
Interment will immediately follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
