Joan Katherine Emrick was a unique, independent, and thoughtful woman who lived life on her own terms. Born on October 21, 1943, in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Marion Leonhard.
Joan loved golf, nature, dancing, and, above all, the friendships she built throughout her life. A well-read and curious woman, she enjoyed a good conversation and welcomed different points of view without judgment. She was generous and loyal to those she loved, with a sharp mind and a willingness to engage in lively discussion. She had a way of making people feel valued, and her friendships were an important part of her life.
Joan devoted her career to education and retired in 2003 as Principal of the Cambridge Alternative School in Garden City, a job she truly loved. She had a special ability to see the potential in students who had struggled in traditional school settings. Joan believed her students were creative, intelligent, and funny, and she worked hard to help them succeed. She was both an advocate and a taskmaster, offering support while holding them accountable. Her students respected and trusted her, and she took great pride in helping them find their way.
Joan also became a much-loved member of a family that welcomed her as their own. Affectionately known as “Aunt Joan,” she was adored by the children and grandchildren who held a special place in her life. She was an important part of the family and will be remembered with great affection by all who knew her.
A resident of Fox Run, Joan leaves behind her brother, David Leonhard of Beverly, Massachusetts; her beloved best friend, Cheryl Willette; and a wide circle of friends who will miss her dearly.
Joan will be remembered for her independence, her intelligence, her love of life, and the many friendships she held dear. She was one of a kind, and her presence will be missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Joan’s memory may consider making a donation to Freedom House Detroit.
