Janet A.
Smith
Dec 25, 1930 — Oct 5, 2025
Janet, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed peacefully into eternal life early Sunday morning, October 5, at her home. She was 94 years old.
Janet was born on Christmas Day in 1930, to the late Henry and Jennie (Hornish) Overly. She married Robert L. Smith on November 3, 1951, at Woodmere Methodist Church on Lawndale Street in Detroit.
Janet was the devoted wife of nearly 74 years to her beloved husband, Robert. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and cherished traditions. She was the loving mother of Jeff (Kathy) Smith and Leanne (Larry) Holtzen; proud grandmother of Spencer (Elizabeth) Smith and Alexandra "Lexi" (Rahul) Mannan; and adoring great-grandmother of Lilah and Emilia Smith, and Sameera and Zara Mannan. She is also survived by her treasured brother-in-law, Jack (Robert MacDonald) Smith. Janet was preceded in death by her brother, James (the late Marilyn) Overly.
Janet had a gift for finding joy in life's simple and grand experiences alike. She delighted in the vibrant beauty of the fall season, especially visits to the Franklin Cider Mill, where cider and doughnuts became part of her family's autumn tradition. A passionate traveler, she explored the world with curiosity and wonder, visiting destinations as far-reaching as Africa, Alaska, Russia, and Egypt.
She will be fondly remembered for her sweet tooth—especially her love of Neapolitan ice cream—and her talent as an accomplished seamstress, creating garments and keepsakes that reflected both her skill and her care.
Above all, Janet's life was defined by her deep devotion to family and friends. Her warmth, generosity, and love left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Her presence will be deeply missed, yet her memory will continue to live on in the lives of her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those who were blessed to call her family and friend.
The Smith family will receive guests at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in downtown Farmington on Thursday, October 9th from 3-6 pm.
Janet's funeral ceremony is planned for Friday morning, October 10, at 11:00 am (in state at 10:00 am) at Nardin Park United Methodist Church, 29887 West Eleven Mile Road, Farmington Hills.
Private interment will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia.
Memorial contributions are kindly suggested to the Shriner's Hospitals for Children or Nardin Park Church .
