Mcelroy
Sep 8, 1954 — Sep 29, 2023
Jim, of Ann Arbor, dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, unexpectedly entered eternal life on Friday afternoon, September 29, 2023, at Michigan Medicine, Ann Arbor. He was 69 years old.
Jim was born in New York, NY, on September 8, 1954, to the late James J. and Mary Patricia (Deignan) McElroy. Jim's journey began at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School in Farmington, where he attended through the 11th grade. He graduated from Farmington High School in 1972 and continued his academic pursuits at the University of Michigan, where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Jim married Marybeth (Comito) on August 25, 1978, at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel in Farmington Hills after first meeting during a high school theatre production where he and Marybeth played an on-stage married couple!
Throughout his professional life, Jim displayed unparalleled dedication and passion for his work. He held positions at prominent companies such as MASCO, Moen, Schlage, and most recently, as an officer and partner of Drinkmate, an innovative carbonated beverage maker based in Ann Arbor. His commitment and tireless work ethic left a lasting impact on those around him.
Outside of his career, Jim found joy in various hobbies, particularly golf and Michigan Wolverine football. He enjoyed downhill skiing and cherished family travels. His love for his family was unmatched, and being a grandfather, or "Poppy" to his three-month-old grandson Charlie, brought immeasurable happiness and fulfillment to his life.
Jim was known for his happy-go-lucky nature, intelligence, and sharp wit. He had a knack for leading with love and compassion, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer sage advice at just the right moment. He cherished his relationships and was a loyal friend, admired for his intellect, and revered as the king of "dad jokes."
As a provider and a mentor, Jim showcased unwavering devotion to his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness that will forever be remembered and cherished by those whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever loved. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 45 years, Marybeth; two dearly loved children, Katie (Chris) Elpers and Jimmy McElroy; his first cherished grandson, Charlie Elpers; his treasured McElroy siblings, John (Marie), Thomas (Carrie), Richard (Cory), Joseph (Barbara), Christopher (Allison) and Patrick (Carol) McElroy, and Molly (Nick) Stamos; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
