James M.
Cummings "Jim"
Sep 28, 1934 — May 17, 2026
Livonia
James "Jim" Cummings, a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and great grandfather, loyal friend, storyteller, lifelong jokester and man of faith passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of laughter, love, and unforgettable memories.
Born to the late George (Beck) Cummings and Elizabeth (Bessie) Rummins, Jim grew up with a quick wit, a kind heart, and the kind of personality that naturally drew people in. He attended Clarenceville High School, where he met the love of his life, Joyce. What began as a high school romance grew into 69 years of marriage, partnership, laughter, and unwavering love.
After graduating from Clarenceville in 1952, Jim and several of his buddies were drafted into the military and stationed in Germany during the occupational period. These treasured friendships lasted a lifetime. One friend in particular, David Rittenger, lived a few doors down when he and Jim met in 1943 at the ages of 10 and 9. They were best friends for life.
Jim spent his career as a service manager for construction equipment rental companies. In 1977 he began working at J. Kelly Company until retiring in 1999. Jims easy going nature and gift for conversation made him well liked by everyone he met. No one was a stranger to Jim.
Family was Jim's whole world. He loved taking the "boys" camping, where days were spent relaxing, talking, and playing poker, and nights were filled with campfires, practical jokes, and funny stories. Those trips became favorite memories and stories that still get told today.
Jim had a gift for creating the kind of memories that stay with you forever. Whether it was through a joke when you weren't expecting it or finding levity in ordinary moments, everyone loved Jim.
Jim loved witty stories, golf outings, bowling, family gatherings, and striking up conversations with complete strangers. Jim and Joyce were simply the kind of people everyone hoped to have as neighbors — warm, funny, dependable, and always happy to share a laugh.
Jim's grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart. Jim loved carrying the kids around and turning ordinary moments into games filled with laughter. Grandpa Jim proudly taught all his granddaughters and great-granddaughters to say "diamond" , a memory that continues to bring smiles today.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce; his dear sons, John (Susan), Jay (Karen), Jeff (Connie), Jerry (Melena), and Jim (Bridget); his adored grandchildren, Sascha, Nick, Katherine, Jennifer, Christopher, Miranda, Shawn, Joseph, Daniel, Adam, Mark, Ashby, Jacob, Benjamin, and Zackary; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Gavin, Orion, Owen, Luke, Levi, Nora Peter, Lily, Jude, Anna, Daniel, Ophelia, Eloise. Macie. Isaac, Abel, and Colten. He is preceded in death by his parents; and eight siblings.
A visitation will take place on Friday, May 22, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with a funeral service at 7pm, both at The Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home.
Burial services will follow at Parkview Memorial Cemetery. Those wishing to witness the burial are asked to meet at the front gates of the cemetery on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
All are welcome to a gathering at Jim & Joyces house following the burial.
The Cummings family would like to thank you for sharing this difficult time.
