Helen
Haskin
Jul 2, 1926 — Jan 15, 2024
Helen, a Livonia resident for over 60 years, passed into eternal life late Monday afternoon, January 15, 2024, at Independence Village of Brighton. She was 97 years old. She was a nurturing beacon of graciousness, embodying qualities that endeared her to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Helen was born July 2, 1926, in Detroit. She attended Fordson High School, Dearborn. She earned her bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Detroit Mercy and practiced her profession with Catholic Social Services for many years.
Helen was a woman of unwavering faith, spiritual and faithful throughout her life. Her kindness and love knew no bounds, touching the lives of her sons, their wives, grandchildren, great-grandson, and many family members and friends. She was a pillar of strength, facing life's challenges with grace and resilience. Despite her own recent decline in health, Helen never uttered a complaint, exemplifying a remarkable acceptance that inspired those around her.
Known for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, Helen had a way of bringing joy to every gathering. Her sense of humor was a hallmark, and her wisdom, discipline, and independence were admired by all who knew her. As a social worker by profession, she dedicated her life to helping others, making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
Helen's generosity extended beyond her professional life. She volunteered at her church, St. Aidan, in various capacities, with a special fondness for organizing the Harvest Festival cake-walk for many years. Her gracious and welcoming nature made her a beloved figure in the community, and she was often referred to as "everyone's mom" by her sons' friends. Her kind spirit and independence endeared her to many.
Family and friends were at the center of Helen's world. Gatherings with loved ones meant everything to her, and she reveled in her role as mom, grandma, and great-grandma. The love she poured into these relationships created a tapestry of memories that will be cherished for generations to come.
Surviving are her three devoted sons, Doug (Lisa), Dave (Chris), and Don (Nina); five cherished grandchildren, Bradley Haskin, Lily Haskin, Christina Ary, Jennifer (Sonny) Izenwata, and Matthew Ary; dearest great-grandson, Cayden Izenwata; and a sister, Wanda Bemben. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Bemben.
Family and friends may gather for visitation at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home on Thursday, January 18, from 2-8 pm.
Helen's funeral mass will be celebrated Friday morning, January 19, at 9:30 am (in state at 9:00 am) at St. Aidan Catholic Church, 17500 Farmington Road, Livonia.
All are welcome to gather after mass in the church hall for a luncheon.
Private interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, will follow the luncheon.
Memorial tributes are suggested to CorsoCare Hospice.
In remembering Helen, let us celebrate a life well-lived—a life marked by love, kindness, and an enduring legacy of selflessness. She leaves behind a void that will be felt deeply, but her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love she so generously shared with the world.
