Heidi Lynn
Morano
Apr 24, 1968 — Jun 30, 2026
Farmington Hills
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Heidi Lynn Morano on June 30, 2026, following a courageous twelve-year battle with cancer. Heidi met every stage of that journey with strength, resilience, and grace that never faded. She passed away with the same dignity, grace, and integrity that she carried throughout her life.
Born on April 24, 1968 in Detroit, Michigan, Heidi was the beloved daughter of Donald and the late Laura Schmidt. Heidi taught, encouraged, and lifted others with an unassuming humility that made her intelligence approachable and warm. She offered strangers the same kindness and warmth as she did her family, friends, colleagues, and students. Heidi had an incredible heart that made everyone feel as though they were the most important person in the room.
Heidi had a presence and energy that would leave those blessed to have met her with an unmistakable lasting feeling of love. Warm, witty, and effortlessly put together, she carried herself with a quiet confidence and a sense of humor that surfaced at just the right moment.
Above all else, Heidi's life revolved around her children, Julianna and Giovanni Morano. As a proud hockey mom to both, Heidi showed up for them in every way that mattered—at games, home and away. The years at hockey rinks became part of the Morano family rhythm, filled with chilly bleachers, loud crowds, and a mother who wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
Heidi was proud beyond measure of Juliana's journalism career in California and Giovanni securing his first mechanical engineering job after earning his degree from Lawrence Technological University.
Heidi's work as a professor at Lawrence Technological University was more than a career—it was a calling. She challenged her students to think critically and expect more from themselves. She did so with the kind of patience and respect that made them want to rise to the occasion. One of the biggest joys of her professional life was having the opportunity to teach her own son, Giovanni.
The loss of her mother, Laura, left a lasting mark on her life, one she carried quietly but deeply. Even through years of personal grief and illness, Heidi remained someone who showed up for others. She listened when people needed to be heard and offered support without hesitation. Her strength wasn't loud, but it was awe-inspiring and constant.
Though life took them on different paths, Heidi and her former husband, Chris Morano, maintained a warm, supportive friendship, a deep mutual respect, and a love for their children and for each other that lasted a lifetime.
Heidi also shared a profoundly close relationship with her Uncle Kevin and his family. Kevin was not only a cherished confidant but also a meaningful spiritual guide for Heidi, offering her wisdom, love, and unwavering support through every season of her life.
Heidi is survived by her children, Juliana and Giovanni Morano; her brother, Jonathan (Heather) Schmidt; her father, Donald (Yvonne) Schmidt; her former husband, Chris Morano; and her extended family, friends, colleagues, and former students whose lives were shaped in ways both big and small by her presence.
Heidi will be remembered for how she moved through life with a presence and energy that stayed with people long after she left the room. In the end, the story of her life wasn't defined by illness or loss, but by everything she built, protected, taught, and fiercely cared about. Those who knew her don't just remember her—they carry her forward in their words, their habits, and the quieter moments when they realize they're still living by something she taught them without ever making a lesson out of it.
