"It is impossible to be a mathematician without being a poet in soul." Sofia Kovalevskaya

On May 6th 2026, the brightness within our hearts dimmed considerably with the untimely departure of Greg Gruska from this earth.

Early on in life his love of mathematics was palpable. Driven by an endless thirst for knowledge his academic accomplishments include advanced degrees in mathematics and engineering from the University of Detroit, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University.

Many in his professional circle knew him for his brilliant mind and innovative spirit. He was a renowned expert in functional safety and quality management as well as an accomplished author, having co-authored over 100 books and papers in quality assurance and statistics. Greg often traveled extensively as he was a sought-after speaker and consultant in his field. He is considered one of the world's foremost authorities on risk management.

In his personal life his friends and family will remember him as being introspective, pragmatic, witty and compassionate. In his youth he was an avid reader of science fiction, especially those that were set in the future or alternate realities. Greg enjoyed singing as a creative expression. He was a chorus member at St. Mary's Preparatory HS in Orchard Lake, when he attended college at the University of Detroit, and when he worked at General Motors he sang with their chorus for several years. His passion for art was evident by his extensive collection of lithographs and watercolor pieces he displayed in his home. Later he became interested in artistic glassware, where he often supported up and coming artisans in this medium.

Greg is survived by his brothers Gerald and David and his sisters Dalia, Janis and Jeannine. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Virginia.

His remarkable life will forever be an inspiration to those of us who have been fortunate to witness this gentle spirit filled with determination and curiosity. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

The Gruska family will receive guests Sunday, May 17, 3-7 pm at the funeral home, where a service will be held Monday, May 18 at 11 am.
