Giuseppe Mediati, "Joe", age 85, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
Joe was born on August 18, 1939, in Cirella, Reggio, Italy, in the region commonly known as Calabria. He was the beloved son of the late Giuseppina and Giuseppe Mediati.
From a young age, Joe was a very intelligent and studious young man, spending much of his time in the library. His dedication led him to enlist in the Italian Army, where his sharp mind earned him the rank of officer ahead of many more seasoned soldiers.
At the age of 20, Joe bravely pursued his dream of a new life in the United States, arriving all by himself. Shortly after settling in, he reconnected with a childhood friend, Maria Varacalli. Their reunion sparked a lifelong bond, and they married on November 19, 1966. Together, they celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage and raised two lovely daughters, completing their family.
Joe devoted his entire career to Ford Motor Company, where his dedication and meticulous nature as an inspector earned him a special award for perfect attendance spanning 25 years. His thorough work was so valued that upon his retirement; the company eliminated the position.
A proud U.S. citizen, Joe's greatest pride was his family. He cherished watching his daughters become mothers themselves and eventually grandmothers, making him a proud great-grandfather.
One of Joe's most memorable moments was taking his family on an eight-week tour of Italy, a trip he had saved for to share the beauty of his homeland with loved ones. Taking them to many sites including his hometown.
Joe was also an avid gardener, eagerly awaiting spring and summer to grow crops he generously shared with neighbors, ensuring everyone had fruits and vegetables to last the year. Known for his generosity, many considered him a second father figure in their lives.
Joe always sent those he loved on their way with the word "Gioia" — a blessing of joy and happiness.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
Joe is the loving husband of Maria; beloved father of Anna Mariani (Dino) and Angie Springett (Gordie); cherished grandfather of Vanesa (Ryan), Serina and Samantha; proud great grandfather of Violet and one more on the way; dearest brother of Joanne and the following deceased, Vincenzo, Cristina and Mary; fond uncle and second father to many nieces and nephews.
The Mediati family will receive friends Sunday, July 27, 2-8 pm at the funeral home, with a rosary service at 7 pm.
A funeral Mass celebrating Joe's life will be Monday, July 28, 10 am (in state 9:30 am), Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23815 Power Rd, Farmington, MI.
Immediately following the Mass a funeral procession will take Joe to his final resting place, Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia, MI. All are invited to join his family in the funeral procession.
