Obituary

Gerard L. "Jerry" Hayden, age 91, of Farmington Hills, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2024. A devout Catholic and member of the Knights of Columbus St. Francis Council for 71 years, Jerry dedicated his life to his faith, family, and community. His commitment to service and kindness touched the lives of many.

Jerry was born October 24, 1932, in Detroit, the son of Clarence and Helen (Holewinski) Hayden. After a colorful childhood, he attended college graduating with a degree in business.

Jerry enjoyed a remarkable 48-year career as a real estate agent, where his genuine, people-first approach made him a trusted figure in the industry, not retiring until his mid 80's. Known for his warm personality, Jerry was a people person who never hesitated to help anyone, often described as the kind of man who would "give the shirt off his back." His friendly and jovial approach to life impacted everyone he met.

In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed ballroom dancing, biking, chocolate and was a member of the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA). Even as he aged, his passion for life and staying active never wavered.

In his younger years, he was in service to his country through the Army, reflecting his lifelong commitment to duty, service, and community.

He was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, and a lover of children and pets, especially Pepper. His family was always his priority, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication.

Jerry was the beloved husband of Lucy; loving father of Laurel (Patrick) Rhyne; cherished grandfather of Lily Rhyne and Zac Seidel; fond brother of Clariece (Robert) McGee; stepfather to Terry Brooks, Lauren Brooks, April Rue, Patrick Brooks, Allen Brooks and Brian Brooks. His love extended to numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary; brothers, Tom and Ray Hayden and stepson, Jerald Brooks.

Jerry will be fondly remembered for his kind heart, his unwavering faith, and the love he shared with all those fortunate enough to know him.

Jerry's family will receive guests on Friday, October 18, 3-8 pm, with a 7 pm Rosary, at the funeral home.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 19, 11 am (in state 10:30 am) at St. Gerald Catholic Church, 21300 Farmington Rd., Farmington.

Interment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly at a later date.

Memorial tributes are suggested to the American Heart Association.
