Obituary

Gerald Donald Burns (Jerry), age 86, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

Jerry was born June 12, 1936, in Union, New Jersey, the son of Thomas and Mary (Nagel) Burns. He served in the U.S. Army, graduated from the University of Notre Dame and married Patricia Ryan on August 4, 1962.  Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and sister Mercedes Magee as well as his beloved son Matthew.

Jerry is the beloved husband of more than 60 years to Patricia; loving father of the late Matthew Burns, Kathleen Burns, Maureen (Rob) Kowalski, and Timothy E. Burns; cherished grandfather of Grace Kowalski, Emmett Kowalski, Aidan Kowalski, Samantha Glazer, Sydney Glazer, and Lola Burns. Further blessings include Jerry's extended family of siblings, nieces and nephews and friends.

Jerry was a man of incredible strength- in his faith, family, integrity, and character.  Always putting family first, Jerry imparted many gifts to those he loved.

His love of U.S. history and travel inspired many family trips, covering nearly every state and affording his children the opportunity to visit most national monuments, parks, and iconic elements of American history.  This gift instilled a curiosity, confidence and love for travel that has been passed on to his grandchildren.

Jerry had the ability to engage in conversation with anyone and make every individual feel very welcome in his presence and the focus of his attention. He had a quick wit that made it easy to be in his company and his warm sense of humor was present even in his final days of suffering.

A strong work ethic and drive to provide and care for his family- always- made for long hours and sacrifices. But Jerry faced every challenge and was steadfast in his dedication to family.  This was most evident in Jerry and Pat's unwavering care for their son Matt throughout his decades-long battle with MS.

Jerry enjoyed watching Tiger baseball and cheering on Notre Dame's Fighting Irish football. He was also a hobbyist, skilled at model ship building, an avid collector (of coins and other memorabilia) and photographer. By far his favorite pastime, the most joyful moments in his life were with his family; Jerry soaked up every moment, attending many activities and celebrating his children and grandchildren.

Jerry will be forever missed. We take great comfort in knowing that how he lived his life has earned him a place beside our Lord for eternity and that he is reunited with his loved ones, especially Matt.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, March 13, 10 am (in state 9:30 am) at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23615 Power Road, Farmington.
