Obituary

Gail Dorothy Weedon, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed into eternal life on September 13, 2025, at Angela Hospice Care Center in Livonia.  She was 85 years old.

Born on September 30, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, Gail was the daughter of George and Dorothy Weedon and the sister of George Weedon Jr. (Madeleine). Her family moved to Detroit when her father accepted a position with Detroit Steel. She graduated from Redford High School, attended Wilmington College, and earned her B.A. from Wayne State University. Despite her Buckeye roots, Gail proudly considered herself a true Detroiter.

Gail dedicated her life to her family. Her number one priority was always the welfare of her children. She is survived by her loving children, Jason Self (Emily), Audrey Self-Olenzek (Rick), and Lara Self; her cherished grandchildren, Kyla and Alina Olenzek, Maeve Fogle-McLerran (Jacob), and Connor Masterson; and her precious great-granddaughter, Freyja Fogle-McLerran.

A woman of strong faith and conviction, Gail was active in her community during the Civil Rights Movement, organizing unifying block club activities and working to improve relationships between residents and area businesses. She was a devoted member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Detroit, Bible Study Fellowship, and Daughters of the King, and she gave generously of her time to philanthropic organizations such as The Daughters of the British Empire.

Gail was a pioneer among women returning to the full-time workforce while raising young children. She held positions in insurance and retail, often balancing multiple jobs at once with determination and grace.

Gail's talents and passions extended far beyond her professional life. Gail was an avid reader, a patron of the arts, an expert seamstress, and a lover of fashion, interior design, and travel. She was an event planner extraordinaire, known for her gift of hospitality and for opening her home to family and friends. A true culinary enthusiast, she delighted in exploring world cultures through food and sharing those experiences with others.

Gail's warmth, creativity, and devotion to family and community touched the lives of many. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

Family and friends may gather for a memorial ceremony honoring Gail's life on Tuesday morning, September 23, at 10:00 am, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 2326 Woodward Avenue, Detroit ( view LIVESTREAM here ).  A luncheon in the church's social hall will follow the memorial.  Private interment at Pine Lake Cemetery, West Bloomfield, will take place later in the day.

Memorial tributes are kindly suggested to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 91891, Washington, D.C. 20090-1891, nationalMSsociety.org.
