Obituary

Fred, of Lake City, MI, age 79, a devoted father, grandfather, and friend, passed from this life on Tuesday morning, June 11, 2024, at Fairmont Senior Living in Farmington Hills. His life was marked by a passion for flying, a love for music, and a deep commitment to guiding and inspiring others.

Fred was born August 29, 1944, at Providence Hospital in Detroit, to the late Norman and Lila (Palo) Niemi and was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Menhart.  Surviving are his two devoted children, Travis (Christina) Niemi and Kelsey (Charles) Ryan; two cherished granddaughters, Isabella and Penelope Ryan; his beloved former wife, Karla Niemi; as well as a host of former colleagues, students and friends.

Fred had an enduring love for aviation, spending many joyful years flying his own Alon Aircoupe aircraft. His unique perspective of the skies fueled his fascination with cloud formations and deepened his appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors and nature.

Charismatic and kind-hearted, Fred was a beloved DJ, or as he preferred, a "disc jockey," for many years. His love for music and his ability to entertain and connect with people brought joy to countless hearts. Fred's engaging personality made every conversation lively and memorable.

A dedicated golfer, Fred instilled his love for the sport in his children, Travis and Kelsey, teaching them the sport from a young age. His patience and enthusiasm for golf were matched only by his passion for teaching. As a professor and teacher, Fred's caring nature and insightful guidance profoundly impacted his students' lives. He was known for offering great advice and imparting valuable life lessons, literally changing lives with his wisdom and kindness.

Stubborn at times, Fred's determination and clarity of purpose often led him to achieve his goals. His love for life was evident in all he did, especially in the bond he shared with his adopted shelter dog, Freya. Fred and Freya were best friends for years, and their companionship brought immense joy to his life.

Fred's big heart and core kindness were felt by all who knew him. His legacy of love, laughter, and inspiration will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those he touched.

May Fred rest in eternal peace, soaring high among the clouds he loved so much.
