Emil Charles
Grohman, Ii
Jun 7, 1949 — Dec 17, 2024
Southfield
Emil Grohman has found peace, walking again with his Lord after a 35-year journey with multiple sclerosis. He passed from this life on December 17, at the age of 75.
Born the eldest of seven children to Emil and Jackie Grohman, Emil grew up in the house his father built in Farmington Township (now Farmington Hills). He graduated from Our Lady of Sorrows High School and furthered his education at the University of Michigan and Oakland Community College. Emil followed his passion for locomotives and railroads, working for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad (now CNNA) until multiple sclerosis necessitated his early retirement in 1995.
Emil's lifelong search for truth led him to be baptized into Jesus Christ in 1982. He was a longtime member of Grace Chapel EPC Church, where his unwavering faith and cheerful spirit, even through the relentless progression of MS, served as an inspiration to many.
Emil had a gift for befriending people on the margins, individuals others might have found difficult to connect with. These unique relationships enriched Emil and Paula's lives, often leading them on interesting and sometimes challenging adventures. Sadly, most of those cherished friends have since passed away.
He enjoyed cultivating vegetables and berries, keeping bees, and working on improvements to his log-sided home for as long as his health allowed. His many interests filled his garage and backyard—sometimes much to the amusement (or occasional exasperation) of his neighbors.
In his final years, Emil was cared for at home by his devoted wife of 53 years, Paula, along with a series of compassionate caregivers, most notably Carla Scott and Karen Fitzhenry. The team from Hospice of Michigan grew to love Emil's radiant smile, blessing him and Paula with their support and care in countless ways.
Emil is survived by his beloved wife, Paula; his siblings David (Elaine), Richard (Elaine), Gary (Cathy), Michael (Leslie), and Connie Anne (John) Knauss; as well as ten nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his sister, Jackie Pat.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at Highland Park Baptist Church, 28600 Lahser Rd, Southfield, MI 48034, with the memorial service at 11 am (visitation at 10 am).
Contributions in Emil's memory may be made to Christian Aid Mission (christianaid.org), Hospice of Michigan (hom.org), or Highland Park Baptist Church (hpbc.com).
