Dorothy Aileen "Dot" Hutton Byrne, passed away June 2, 2026, at the Angela Hospice Care Center in Livonia, 18 months after she was diagnosed with cancer. She was 86.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Edith and George Hutton; her husband, Patrick; her brothers Richard "Terry" (Kathy) Hutton and Robert (Eileen) Hutton; her son Lawrence Melton and daughter-in-law Karen Melton, and her son Terris (Debbie) Byrne.
Dorothy is remembered by her sister Carolyn Ballard, brother Roger Hutton, daughter Ellen Byrne, son Patrick (Ellen) Byrne, grandchildren Terry Byrne, Joseph Colone, Hannah Melton, Angela Colone, Nataliya Ocheretna, Emily Byrne and Matthew Byrne, great-granddaughter Leilah O'Brien-Byrne and Leilah's mother Brookelynn O'Brien, her step-daughter Cindy De Anda, several beloved nieces and nephews, and countless honorary family members.
She was Born in Detroit in 1939 and lived most of her life in Detroit and Redford. Known to her family for her wry sense of humor, strong work ethic and knack for puzzles of all kinds, Dorothy was a beloved matriarch of the neighborhood and longtime patron of the Canterbury Palace restaurant. She held a wide variety of jobs. For 10 years, she delivered newspapers every morning to hundreds in Redford. Following Pat's death in 1988, Dorothy pursued a new career at age 48, receiving her medical assistant certification. She worked in doctors' offices for more than 20 years and took great pride in her role as a surgical medical assistant. A volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Redford for many years, Dorothy was involved in several community activities and civic groups around Redford, Farmington and Farmington Hills. A lover of coffee and good conversation, Dorothy frequently hosted family gatherings and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Her love and warmth will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
The Byrne family will receive friends Monday, June 8, 2-8 pm at the funeral home. Dorothy's funeral ceremony is planned for Tuesday morning, June 9, 11 am, also at the funeral home.
