Obituary

Dennis J. Tini, 76, of Farmington Hills, Michigan, passed away on October 7, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. A respected educator, musician and member of the local, national and international music communities, Dennis made an indelible mark on the world of music and education.

Dennis was born April 12, 1948, in Endicott, NY, the son of the late Remo and Carmen Tini.

For over 40 years, Dennis served as Professor of Music at Wayne State University, where he was honored as Distinguished Professor Emeritus upon his retirement in 2015. Dennis had a significant influence on the Department of Music, serving as co-founder of the Jazz Studies Program, Director of Choral Activities and Chairman of the Department. In his final years at Wayne, Dennis served as Senior Associate Dean in the College of Fine and Performing Arts. Dennis is the 2024 Music Department Honoree for the annual WSU Arts Achievement Award, to be held on October 17. His work as a professor, administrator, conductor and jazz pianist earned him additional accolades, and his legacy in the music department remains strong.

Dennis was a passionate advocate for jazz education, having served as President of the International Association of Jazz Educators and Vice President of the Michigan Jazz Festival Board of Directors. A talented jazz pianist, composer and conductor, Dennis shared his love of music through various community initiatives. He was the founder and volunteer music director at Have Faith Haiti, as well as director of security - training guards and helping to ensure safety at the orphanage. He also created the South African Music Relief Fund, helping to support student musicians and promote cultural exchange.

In addition to his musical achievements, Dennis volunteered with the Farmington Hills Fire Department and enjoyed practicing martial arts, embodying a spirit of service and discipline.

Dennis is survived by his loving family, friends and countless students whose lives he touched through his passion and dedication for excellence in music education and performance. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of musicians and educators.

Dennis is the loving husband of 32 years to April; beloved father of Nicole; dearest brother of Ray, Ron (Lynne) and Janice Norville (Phil); fondest brother-in-law and son-in-law and cherished uncle to many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Dennis's life will be held Sunday, October 13, 11 AM at the funeral home. A visitation will take place immediately following the service and continue until 5 pm.
