Claudia M.
Thibodeau
Oct 10, 1953 — Feb 12, 2025
Claudia Marie Thibodeau, 71, passed away from complications of heart failure on the evening of February 12, 2025, with her son by her side.
Claudia was born October 10, 1953 to Claude and Eloise (neé Grimes ) Thibodeau in Detroit, Michigan. Growing up in the Catholic schools, Claudia was a 1971 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy High School, and earned her undergraduate and two masters degrees in Education and Social Work from Michigan State University. She was a dedicated mother and community member and held various roles in service to the Catholic Church. She lived in Farmington Hills from 1990-2020, where she cared for her mother, raised her son, and created community with many friends.
Claudia could always be found with a book nearby and sought inspiration through words. She loved nothing more than spending quality time with her family, and having long chats over endless coffee refills at the nearest Leo's Coney Island. Dedicated to the service of others, she volunteered considerable time with the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament and with Detroit Catholic Central High School. She lived to support others, even amidst needs of her own. She was quick to offer her help to a friend or extend a listening ear to a stranger.
Her son, Alexander Thibodeau (Grand Rapids), brought her immense joy. She never missed a chance to be the loudest cheer at a sporting event, the proudest face at an important milestone, and the kindest embrace after every challenge. She was an exceptional mother and led her family with a commitment to fun, unconditional love, and constant unwavering support.
She had a sentimental spirit, and the biggest heart. To be loved by Claudia was to be at the top of her mind and her shopping list. She loved a sentimental knick-knack or a sweet treat. Her loved ones could always count on receiving a card for every holiday, milestone, and setback.
Claudia moved to West Michigan in 2020 to be closer to her son's family. In Byron Center, she found wonderful community and almost instantly developed deep, meaningful friendships. She spent time at the local senior center, and regularly swept the bingo and card game circuit. She loved trying new foods and exploring the dining options in her area. She was neither a gambler nor a culinary elitist, but relished any chance to connect across a card or dinner table. To her, these connections are what gave life meaning.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Eloise, and father, Claude. Surviving is her son, Alexander, and daughter-in-law, Brittany.
Family and friends may gather for visitation at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington, on Friday, February 21, from 3-8 pm.
