Obituary

Charles Humphrey Cromer, of Farmington, a true American patriot and WWII US Army veteran passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, September 29, 2023, at the remarkable age of 99.

Born March 19, 1924, in Chicago, one of nine children born to Leonard and Gladys (Hill) Parker. Charles was named after both of his grandfathers, Humphrey Hill and Charles Montgomery, embodying the legacy and strength of his family from the very beginning.

Charles attended Northeast Junior High School and later graduated in 1942 from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas. During his time in high school, he met the love of his life, Inell, with whom he would share a deep and lasting bond that included a 70+ year marriage that included many, many raucous Scrabble games! Known as the class clown in school, Charles was immensely popular, always entertaining his classmates with his lively personality.  He recently told his family he was too short to play basketball, so he excelled at football since he was "quicker than all the big guys".

Following his graduation, Charles proudly served in the US Army through WWII demonstrating remarkable dedication and bravery. He was honorably discharged in 1946, leaving behind a legacy of valor and commitment to his beloved country.

Charles had a passion for sports and found joy in serving as the Athletic Equipment Director at Wayne State University. He was a proud and active member of the community, earning the honor of being appointed as the Grand Marshal of the Memorial Day Parade by the City of Farmington and the Groves Walker American Legion Post #346 on May 29 this year.

A true go-getter, Charles was known as the original "tough guy," unafraid to undertake any challenge. He was an inspiration to his family, always encouraging them to do the right thing and to persevere through life's adversities. He faced numerous challenges, including the losses of three sons, with unwavering determination and resilience. In his 60s, following a lifetime of the habit, he even quit smoking, displaying his strength and fortitude, always living by the motto "one day at a time."

Charles deeply loved his family and was a devoted husband to Inell for over 70 years until her passing on November 29, 2016. Moreover, he had a passion for photography, particularly capturing the beauty of nature and water, and found solace in Detroit's Belle Isle. He loved bike rides and watching planes come and go at Metro Airport. An avid reader, he cherished mysteries and Westerns, as well as reading and writing poetry, including a published book of poems, showcasing his creative spirit.

Charles will be fondly remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, neighbor, and friend. He leaves behind a rich legacy of love, resilience, and patriotism. He even lived to witness the Detroit Lions achieving a winning season so far, bringing him immense joy!

Charles will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace and continue to be a source of inspiration to us all.

Charles is survived by two devoted daughters, Janice Hall and Charnell Cromer; eight grandchildren, Ronnie (Tamika) Cromer, Jr., Simone Cromer, Michelle Cannon, Maya Richardson, Charles (Monique) Hall, Kimberly Hall, Christopher (Frankie) Hall, and Jon Reed; several great-grandchildren and a host of friends.  In addition to his wife, Charles was preceded in death by three sons, Charles, Ronnie, and Kenneth Cromer, a granddaughter, Suzette Cromer, and eight siblings.
